Seva Mandal Education Society’s Smt. Kamalaben Gambhirchand Shah Law School, SNDT University is organizing their 1st National Client Counselling Competition (Virtual) on December 18-19, 2021.
About Smt. K. G. Shah Law School
The foundation for Seva Mandal Education Society was laid in 1957 when it began its first college for women with merely seven students. It has gradually expanded over a period of time, both in terms of the number of students as well as the programs offered. The Society has been successfully imparting qualitative education to women for nearly six decades, and has a student strength of around 6000 women students on the campus. It offers a variety of programs ranging from Certificate and Diploma programs, Junior College, undergraduate Degree programs and post graduate Degree and Diploma courses.
The mission of SMES is to strive for the ‘Empowerment of Women through Quality in Education’, and our institution has been working towards this goal with great determination and dedication. It particularly provides an opportunity for those women who would otherwise be deprived of higher education because of conservative family backgrounds, to avail of qualitative educational facilities, thereby enabling them to become self-sufficient. Smt. Kamalaben Gambhirchand Shah Law School was opened in the campus providing B.B.A. LL.B Course in 2009.
The Smt. Kamalaben Gambhirchand Shah Law School (SKGSLS) also known as K. G. Shah College located at 338 R.A. KIDWAI ROAD, MATUNGA, MUMBAI Maharashtra. The College has been recognized by Bar Council of India since a long time.
We are committed to impart comprehensive legal education by promoting legal and ethical values in the legal field. Our mission is to promote legal education and legal awareness in the community: To achieve social political and economic justice and objectives enshrined in the constitution.
Objectives of the Competition
-
The Client Counseling Competition promotes greater knowledge and interest among law students in the preventative law and counseling functions of law practice.
-
It also encourages students to develop interviewing, planning, and analytical skills in the lawyer-client relationship in the law office. Interviewing and advising are a significant part of most lawyers’ work.
-
Too often, it is assumed that lawyers have the listening and questioning skills needed to conduct an effective interview.
-
The Competition provides an opportunity for a valuable educational and cultural interchange between students, law teachers, and legal practitioners.
Nature of the Competition
The Competition simulates a law office consultation in which two law students, acting as lawyers (attorneys/solicitors/legal practitioners), are presented with a client matter.
The students are given a brief written memorandum that identifies the general nature of the subject-matter of the client’s problem (e.g., that a client wants advice about a problem arising from the construction of a house, that the client is facing a shoplifting charge, etc.) before the interviews are held.
The students conduct an interview with a person playing the role of the client. Students are expected to elicit the relevant information from the client, explore with the client his or her preferred outcome, outline the nature of the problem, and present the client with a means (or range of alternatives, if appropriate) for resolving the problem.
The interview with the client is then followed by a post-consultation period during which the students, in the absence of the client, analyze the interview and discuss the legal and other work to be undertaken. The students are evaluated against specific criteria that emphasize the use of listening, questioning, planning, and analytical skills in a lawyer/client interview.
Once the judges have completed their evaluation of the interview, the students are called back in and the judges provide a brief critique of the team’s handling of the consultation and post-consultation periods.
