Introduction

The Red Cross International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Moot is being organised under the auspices of an Organizing Committee, comprising representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) with objectives to

  • Raise awareness of international humanitarian issues among law students.

  • Enhance knowledge and application of international humanitarian law (IHL) rather than black letter law.

  • Promote the spirit of humanity among law students in the Asia-Pacific region.

  • Know more about the role and works of the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement.

 

Important Information

  • In light of the recent pandemic of the COVID-19, the Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) and the ICRC Beijing Delegation (ICRC) decide to conduct the 2021 edition of the IHL Moot Court Competition for the Asia Pacific region (IHL Moot) through the submission of memorials and with virtual oral hearings.

Key Dates of the Competition

Some countries encounter difficulties in application due to the COVID situation. After the discussion of ICRC and HKRC and approval by the Organizing Committee, the Registration will be closed on 15 Jan 2021. The key dates are revised on December 2020 as below:

  • Scope of the IHL: The application of IHL triggers a wide range of protective rules to the benefit of the persons affected by armed conflict.

  • The Mandate of the ICRC: The role of ICRC and the related humanitarian missions to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance.
