About School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University)
School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bangalore, was founded and is administered by Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI). The parent university, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), formerly Christ College had the rare distinction of being one of the first institutions in India to be accredited in 1998 by the NAAC. Subsequently, in 2004 and 2016, CHRIST (Deemed to be University) has the top grade ‘A’ in the 4-point scale. In four decades, the institution has become the most preferred educational institution in the city. SLCU entered the list of top law schools in India according to the NIRF Rankings declared by the MHRD in 2020. The Courses are approved by the Bar Council of India. About the Moot Court Society
The Moot Court Society (MCS) of School of Law is a student run body under the able guidance of our faculty coordinators. The society seeks to channelize students into the activity of mooting. The primary goal of MCS is to provide all students with the opportunity to harbour research, oral advocacy skills, legal drafting skills and other essential prowess to mould a student into an adept mooter. In order to achieve this objective, MCS organizes various events like Moot Primer (for novice mooters), Introductory Moot Rounds for 1st-year students, Internal Moot Championship between 1st and 2ndyear students, Internal National Ranking Rounds, Internal International Scheduled Moot Ranking Rounds and our flagship event – National Moot Court Competition which is an inter-collegiate event. Teams of SLCU have a long tradition of excellence in mooting and advocacy at both national and international levels. This year as well, MCS strives to promote and foster a vibrant mooting culture to reach greater heights and set new benchmarks.
About the National Moot Court Competition
The National Moot Court Competition (NMCC), which has attracted significant attention from students around the country and has evolved into one of the most prestigious moots in the country, has been one of the most prominent events on the MCS calendar over the years.
The past editions of the NMCC have revolved around the propositions with subject matters primarily relating to Constitutional Law, Competition Law, Arbitration Law and Tax Laws. Additionally, the NMCC has had the pleasure of hosting eminent dignitaries such as Hon'ble Mr. Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, Hon'ble Mr. Justice A.K. Sikri, Hon’ble Mr. Justice L. Nageswara Rao, Late Mr. Ram Jethmalani, Ms. Indira Jaising, and many other notable figures from the Legal world.
The 12th Flagship Edition of the National Moot Court Competition is scheduled to be held from 18th to 21st November 2021 virtually, and it shall strive to carry forward the same legacy in providing a holistic experience of mooting in the virtual format.
Participation
All law colleges/ institutions/ universities across the country recognized by the Bar Council of India are eligible to take part in the Competition. All participants must be currently pursuing their Bachelor’s degree in Law, i.e., either 3 year or 5 year courses. Only one team per college/institution/university shall be allowed to participate.
Registration

Competition registration shall be based on first come first serve basis to 40 participating teams. Registration shall be successful upon completion of all formalities mentioned in the Rules. Last day for Online Registration is 17th October, 2021 (by 6:00 PM). Request for Refund of Registration Fee shall not be entertained.

Other Important Links
Team Composition
Each participating team can comprise either two (2) or three (3) members. In case of two (2) members, both the members shall be designated as speakers. In case of three (3) members, two (2) members shall be designated as speakers and one (1) member shall be designated as the researcher. No change in composition of team shall be entertained after the completion of registration.
Official Language
The official language of the competition shall be English. All competition rounds, memoranda and compendiums must be in English.

The registration fee for the Competition is INR 1,800/- (Rupees One Thousand Eight Hundred Only).

Registration fee is only payable in favor of Christ University, Bengaluru via the online portal at https://southindianbank.in/ChristFee/ , please select the “FEST’ option followed by which you may select “The National Moot Court Competition 2021” and proceed with the payment, attached in Annexure – ‘A’ are the relevant screenshots indicating the process.
Dress Code
The dress code for all participants throughout the competition shall be:

Competition Format
The 12th School of Law, CHRIST, National Moot Court Competition, 2021 shall consist of a Researcher’s Test and the following oral rounds, Preliminary Rounds, Octa-Final Round, Quarter-Final Round, Semi-Final Round and the Final Round. The Octa-Final, Quarter- Final, Semi-Final and the Final Round shall be knockout rounds where each team will argue only once either for the Petitioner/Applicant or Respondent.
Researcher's Test
The Researcher’s Test will be conducted prior to the oral rounds. The test shall be proctored and be conducted on an online platform. The questions for the test shall be objective based on the applicable law, precedents and facts pertaining to the Moot Proposition i.e. MCQ based test.
There shall be a total of 25 Questions for 2 marks each. The test shall be taken by the team’s researcher. In case the team has no designated researcher, one of the speakers shall be required to take the Researcher’s Test. Please note that the marks scored in the test shall not contribute to the overall score and is only to determine the winner of the Best Researcher's award. Rules and Regulations with regards to the conduct of Researcher’s test shall be sent to the participants in due time.
Preliminary Round
The preliminary rounds shall be conducted in two stages. Each stage will have one preliminary round where each team will represent either the petitioner/applicant or respondent for that round. Sides will be determined by way of draw of lots. Each team will face a separate team and a separate bench in both the preliminary rounds.
The qualification to Octa-Finals will be determined based on the Round Point System as explained in Provision VI.
Addendum
The teams based on their registration and the team code disclosed therein, shall be allotted either Petitioner/Applicant or Respondent i.e. all teams with an even number code shall be Petitioner/Applicant for the preliminary round and all teams with an odd number code shall be Respondent for the preliminary round. If a team is allotted Petitioner/Applicant for Preliminary Round 1, the same team shall be representing Respondent for Preliminary Round 2. Prior to each round, in furtherance of transparency, the Moot Court Society shall conduct a meeting for draw of lots wherein teams will be paired at random by using particular randomizing software.
Octa-Final Round
The top sixteen (16) teams selected by way of Provision VI shall qualify for the octa-final round. A seeding chart shall be prepared with ranks being given to the top 16 teams. To ensure fair play, power match-up shall determine the fixtures which shall be prepared with the top sixteen (16) teams in such a way that Rank one (1) goes against Rank sixteen (16), Rank two (2) goes against Rank fifteen (15) and so on. Only the sides on which the teams shall argue will be determined by way of draw of lots.
Quarter-Final Round
The top eight (8) teams selected by way of Provision VI shall qualify for the quarter-final round. A seeding chart shall be prepared with ranks being given to the top 8 teams. To ensure fair play, power match-up shall determine the fixtures which shall be prepared with the top eight (8) teams in such a way that Rank one (1) goes against Rank eight (8), Rank two (2) goes against Rank seven (7) and so on. Only the sides on which the teams shall argue will be determined by way of draw of lots.
Semi-Final Round
The top four (4) teams selected by way of Provision VI shall qualify for the semi- final round. A seeding chart shall be prepared with ranks being given to the top 4 teams. To ensure fair play, power match-up shall determine the fixtures. Rank one (1) will go against Rank four (4) and Rank two (2) against Rank three (3). Only the sides on which the teams shall argue will be determined by way of draw of lots.
Final Round
The top two (2) teams selected by way of Provision VI shall qualify for the final round. Sides will be determined by way of draw of lots.
Memoranda
Format Specifications
All memoranda must be typed on A4 sized white paper, except for the cover page, with font size 12, font type Times New Roman, line spacing 1.5 with justified alignment and uploaded on the google form link which shall be shared in due time.

General Instructions
Every participating team must prepare a separate memorandum (written submissions) for petitioner/ applicant and respondent complying with all provisions of the Rules.
The maximum page limit for the memorandum is 35 Pages, including the cover page, table of contents, table of abbreviations, index of authorities, etc. Please note that the Summary of Facts shall not exceed more than 1,000 words. Furthermore, arguments advanced shall not exceed 20 pages. The memorandum shall strictly be below 20% plagiarism limit, non-adherence to which shall attract penalties in memorial scoring. No end notes are to be included in the Memorandum.
The cover page must only include the following in justified alignment except mentioned otherwise, Team Code on the right-hand top corner-
The color scheme for the cover page of the Petitioner/Applicant memorandum must be Blue and of the Respondent memorandum must be Red. Citations for the memoranda are to be in the form of footnotes only, endnotes are not permitted. Footnotes must not contain substantive pleadings and should not be communicative. All footnotes must adhere to the 20th Edition of bluebook citation format. The memoranda must not contain annexure, photographs, sketches, exhibits or affidavits etc., violation of the said provision will attract penalties.
Submission Guidelines
All participating teams must submit soft copy of the memoranda (both petitioner/applicant and respondent) either on or before 7th November, 2021 at 23:59 hours. The soft copiesin both MSWord (.doc or .docx) and PDF (.pdf) format must be uploaded on the Google form. The details regarding the Google form will be shared at a later date. Identity of the team or names of the participants or the institution name must not be disclosed.
Memoranda Scoring
The Moot Court Society shall constitute a panel of judges with domain expertise, for the evaluation of the memoranda. Both memoranda shall be evaluated separately on a scale of 0-100. The criteria for evaluation are as follows

Oral Pleadings
The order of oral pleadings shall be as follows:

During the course of the oral pleadings, no speaker shall disclose his/her identity or the identity of his/her institution by any means whatsoever. If in case, the petitioner/applicant do not raise for rebuttal, the sur-rebuttal is deemed to be cancelled.

Copyrights to all Memorials submitted to School of Law, CHRIST (Deemed to be University) in furtherance of this competition shall vest with the Organizers and the Organizers reserve the right to transfer the same to any Knowledge Partner.

The Moot Court Society reserves the right to take appropriate action for any unethical, unprofessional, immoral conduct and uncalled for behavior of the participants at the competition.

The Moot Court Society highly recommends that teams make their own arrangements for internet access as the rounds shall be held virtually. Further, the rules and procedure regarding the virtual rounds shall be released at a later stage. The Virtual Rounds shall be held on Cisco WebEx primarily. Google Meet maybe used for the creation of Intermediary lobbies.

If any situation arises which is not contemplated by the Rules, the decision of the

Organizing Committee shall remain final and binding.
The Moot Court Society reserves the right to vary, alter, modify and/or repeal any provision of the Rules if so required.
