Odisha Judicial Service Examination

The Odisha Judicial Service Examination (OJSE) is conducted every year by the Odisha High Court - Cuttack or Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) for recruitment to Civil Judge Cadre posts in the state of Odisha.

All applicants will need to go through three stages of the selection process, after meeting the minimum eligibility criteria, as mentioned by the Government. The first is the Preliminary Written Examination, followed by a Main Written Examination and then Interview. Candidates who qualify for all the aforementioned stages will be finalised for the post of Civil Judges.

 

Odisha Judicial Service Exam - Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification:

  1. Graduation degree in Law from a University or Institution recognized by the Government.

  2. A Ministerial Officer or Superintendent in the High Court OR a Civil & Criminal Court sub-ordinate to High Court OR an Assistant Law Officer OR Translator of the Law Department of Government +compulsory Law graduate from a University recognized by State Government + Approved service of minimum 7 years in the High Court/Civil or Criminal Court sub-ordinate to the High Court or in the Law department.

Age limit:

  1. The minimum age of a candidate should be at least 23 years and the maximum age should not be above 35 years.

  2. The maximum age limit is relaxed by 5 years for reserved category candidates.

Other Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Should be the Citizen of India.

  2. Should be able to read, write and speak Odia + should have passed an exam in Odia language that must be equivalent to Middle English School standard (Class VII). 

 

Odisha Judicial Service Exam -  Pattern 

OPSC Judicial Services Exam is held in three different stages. Given below is an insight into the exam pattern of the OJSE.

  • Prelims Exam: For the prelims exam, a single paper is formulated for 100 marks. The exam needs to be wrapped up in a period of 1.5 hours. The questions are asked in MCQ format (Multiple Choice Questions) with each question comprising 1 mark. For every incorrectly attempted question, 0.25 marks are deducted. Candidates have to secure a minimum of 40% marks for the preliminary exam to qualify for the mains exam. SC/ST category students make it to the mains exam with 35% marks.

  • Mains Exam: The main written exam, has 3 optional and 2 mandatory papers. Each compulsory subject carries 150 marks and have to be completed within a time frame of 2.5 hours. Each of the optional subjects is 150 marks and 3 hours duration. Unreserved category students have to obtain over 45% mark and SC/ST category aspirants have to secure over 33% marks for each paper to qualify for the interview round.

  • Interview: The weightage of the interview is 100 marks. In order to make it to the merit list, aspirants have to secure a minimum of 40% marks.

Prelims Exam: The important topics of the prelims exams are provided below.

  • Code of Civil Procedure

  • Indian Penal Code

  • Constitution of India

  • Transfer of Property Act

  • Code of Criminal Procedure

  • Evidence Act

  • Law of Succession (Indian Succession Act and Hindu Succession Act)

  • Limitation Act

  • Contract Act

  • Specific Relief Act

Mains Exam: Here are the topics that need to be studied for the mains exam.

Procedural Laws (Mandatory Exam): The topics for Procedural Laws that must be covered are specified below.

  • The Code of Civil Procedure, 1908

  • The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973

  • The Indian Evidence Act, 1872

General English (Mandatory Exam): Given below is a glimpse of the General English Syllabus.

  • A short essay of about 150 words

  • One passage of about 500 words with 5 questions

  • Translation and retranslation of ten lines each

  • Precis writing consisting of 300 words

Optional Exam: For the optional exam, candidates have to pick up any of the three subjects given below.

  • Personal Law: Hindu Law; Mohammedan Law

  • Law of Property: Transfer of Property Act, 1882; Specific Relief Act, 1963; Indian Limitation Act, 1963

  • Jurisprudence and Constitution of India

  • Law of Crime & Law of Torts

  • Law of Contract: Indian Contract Act, 1872; Sales of Goods Act, 1930; Partnership Act, 1932; Negotiable Instrument Act, 1881

Interview: The questions that may be asked in the interview are from National and International issues and matters of common interest in the field of Science and Arts.

 

Odisha Judicial Service Exam - Exam Centers

The preliminary written examination will be held at these 5 zonal centres - Balasore, Berhampur, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack & Sambalpur. In case, the number of applicants is not that high, candidates opting for those zones will be accommodated at Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. The main written examination may be held either at these 5 zones or at Bhubaneswar and Cuttack zones, depending upon the total number of applicants appearing for the exam.
 

Odisha Judicial Service Exam - Salary Details

Pay Scale of 27,700-770-33,090- 920-40,450-1080-44,770/-, with usual dearness allowance and other allowances as sanctioned by the Government of Odisha from time to time as admissible.
