GNLU’s Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Programme 2022-23

Gujarat National Law University invites applications for admission in Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme for the academic year 2022-23 in Law and Interdisciplinary Research with Law. About GNLU Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) is a statutory University established by the Government of Gujarat under the Gujarat National Law University Act, 2003. The University is recognized by the Bar Council of India and the UGC. About the PhD Programme at GNLU The University offers the PhD Degree Programme in the following disciplines: (1) Law, (2) Interdisciplinary Research with Law in the disciplines of Management, Social Work, Sociology, Political Science, Economics, Physics, and Botany. Number of Seats Law (06) Interdisciplinary Research with Law Management/Allied Areas (05) Social Work (02) Sociology/Allied Areas (01) Political Science (01) Economics/Allied Areas (10) Physics/Allied Areas (07) Botany/Allied Areas (01) Minimum Qualifications for Admission Candidates for admission to the PhD programme shall have a Master’s degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree with at least 55% marks in aggregate. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50% or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master’s degree prior to 19th September, 1991. Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M.Phil. Degree of an Indian Institution, from a Foreign Educational Institution. The applicants who have cleared the entrance test with 50% score as qualifying marks are required to do a presentation on the preliminary research proposal with a statement of the research problem and a literature survey which demonstrates that the research topic is unexplored and an original scholarly contribution can be made on the same. Mode of the PhD Programme Law: Full Time only Interdisciplinary Research with Law: Full time/ Part Time Category of Scholars A full time scholar has to attend the University regularly and will be subject to the prescribed attendance rules of the University. Professionally employed personnel may be allowed to pursue PhD on part-time bases. Such candidates are required to submit a ‘No Objection Certificate’ from their parent organization/department/employer stating that he/she is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis and that his/her duties permit him/her to devote sufficient time for research. Part Time Scholars will have to attend the classes for assigned coursework as per the rules of the University/UGC. Eligibility It is desirable that the applicants, who possess minimum prescribed qualifications for admission to PhD Programme, should have an excellent academic/professional track record in the relevant discipline. The applicant for part-time PhD should: Prove to the satisfaction of DRC that his official duties permit him to devote sufficient time to research. Ensure that facilities for pursuing research are available at his place of work in the chosen field of research, where required. Duration PhD programme shall be for a minimum duration of three years, including course work and a maximum of six years. Extension beyond the above limits will be governed by the relevant clauses as stipulated in the Statute/Ordinance of the University. The women candidates and Persons with Disability (more than 40% disability) may be allowed a relaxation of two years for PhD in the maximum duration. In addition, the women candidates may be provided Maternity Leave/Child Care Leave once in the entire duration of PhD programme for up to 240 days. Course Work Registered Full-time and Part-time PhD candidates shall undertake course work of one semester in the University within one year from the date of provisional registration, failing which his/her registration shall be cancelled. The credit assigned to the PhD course work shall be a minimum of 08 credits and a maximum of 16 credits. The course work shall be treated as a prerequisite for PhD preparation. Additionally, the Research Advisory Committee may prescribe the course(s) to the research scholar. A PhD scholar has to obtain a minimum of 55% of marks or its equivalent grade in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade/CGPA in a point scale) in the course work in order to be eligible to continue in the programme and submit the dissertation/thesis. Working professionals are also encouraged to apply. Tuition Fee The tuition fee is Rs. 1,92,000/- per semester. General Scholarships: A limited number of scholarships of up to 50% tuition fee waiver will be made available on merit cum means basis at the time of admission. Tridib Roy Chowdhury Scholarship is being endowed to extend a 100% tuition waiver, for a year, to an entering M.Sc. (Digital Society) student. This scholarship will apply a merit-cum-means criterion, with preference to a woman applicant. The candidate will be identified by the Admissions Committee of the M.Sc. programme. International Applicants International students to be admitted in the academic year 2022-23 will have to pay a tuition fee of US$ 10,000 per year (at the rate of US$ 5,000 per semester). The tuition fee is periodically revised and such revisions are announced before the start of every academic year. In addition, admitted students who stay on campus in the student hostels, pay approximately US$ 1,200 per year towards hostel charges and approximately US$ 1,000 per year for food. The Institute reserves the right to change these rates periodically. About the Program Program Dates: Spring 2022 Mergers and Acquisitions: Structuring and Leading Deals Mergers and Acquisitions: Structuring and Leading Deals provides participants with an overview of the M&A process through multiple lenses including strategic, financial, legal, and operational. The program is designed to provide participants with an in-depth analysis of the components of mergers and acquisitions. Participants will explore: How M&A can be a core component of firm strategy How targets and synergies are valued How M&A transactions are sourced, initiated, and priced How deals are structured and designed What kinds of disputes and potential lawsuits arise over the course of an M&A transaction How targets are integrated after the deal is formally complete Mergers and Acquisitions: Structuring and Leading Deals is aimed at those with responsibility for managing, overseeing, and implementing M&A transactions. The focus will be transactions in major markets such as the U.S. and the U.K., but the course will also cover aspects of cross-border mergers and acquisitions. Participants do not need to have a background in mergers and acquisitions and the course will add value to those with previous mergers and acquisitions experience. Program Goals Mergers and Acquisitions: Structuring and Leading Deals is an immersive program designed to provide participants with an overview of the M&A process through multiple lenses. The program aims to prepare you to: Identify key stages of a deal, critical decisions in each stage, and the major legal and other constraints on those decisions. Create strategies to mitigate risks and leverage opportunities to successfully navigate each stage of the deal. Identify the motives for and parameters of a range of deal types, including large and small, domestic and cross-border, public and private target, friendly and hostile, whole company and partial acquisitions. Understand the M&A process from different perspectives including strategy, finance, negotiations, law, tax, and operations to better steer your organization (and/or clients) through future deals. Curriculum The Learning Model Case studies, lectures, classroom discussions, and small group discussions ensure that techniques and strategies are memorable and implementable. Case studies on law firms and other professional service firms give participants exposure to real-world issues and help them work through possible approaches and solutions to the problems that professional service firm leaders confront. Participants practice making decisions about challenging real-life management problems in professional service settings.
