1st JFIEL Student Paper Conference by Jindal Global Law School
1st JFIEL Student Paper Conference by Jindal Global Law School

About Jindal Global Law School O.P. Jindal Global University is a university established by the Haryana Private Universities Act, 2009 at Sonipat, Haryana.    About the Conference The theme for the conference is ‘Making International Law Relevant – Promises and Challenges for India’.  The conference acknowledges the fact that international law is not a prominent part of Indian legal practice and public discourse. The conference aims at challenging this status quo with analytical, reflective, and grounded papers which show the significance of international law to the Indian context.   Theme The submissions could highlight how international law could become an arena through which the Indian State could advance its strategic interests, whether in tribunals, international organizations or in its relations with other States and international actors (as most clearly seen in the Khulbushan Jadhav case or India’s attempt to secure a permanent seat at the Security Council). Submissions could similarly discuss how India should align its domestic practices and policies towards compliance with international law to serve strategic interests, such as avoiding repetitions of Vodafone-like litigation. In sum, submissions should not only engage with the law but offer compelling policy reasons for the practical importance or utility of taking international law seriously. Equally, pieces arguing for the relevance of international law where it is absent in mainstream literature on any domestic controversies in any context are welcomed. All fields in public and private international law may be engaged with, including: International human rights law International humanitarian law International criminal law International investment law International trade law International commercial arbitration International environmental law International space law Interested authors may share their topic of interest with the organizers before writing, on the contact provided below. If pieces purely include an application of the law or rearticulate it in contexts where it has already been extensively debated, we would encourage sending them to our rolling blog, rather than the Conference. If authors wish to write on any historical issue, their analysis should nevertheless be linked to some contemporary debates or events.   Conference Format The conference will be held in a hybrid format. The participants are expected to attend the events physically on the premises of Jindal Global Law School (“JGLS”), Sonipat. For students unable to join physically, online participation will remain an option to retain accessibility. Student panels for the paper presentations will be composed of both JGLS students and external students. External participants could be from either Indian or foreign universities but must be at the undergraduate level. Along with panel presentations where all students would benefit from collaborative discussion and networking, participants will also engage in seminars with luminaries of the international legal field. Only authors whose pieces are shortlisted will attend the conference events.   Submission Guidelines It is compulsory for authors to submit a 100-200 word abstract and a 2,000-2,500 word paper. These documents will be assessed together for the shortlisting. Co-authorship is not allowed for the conference. Kindly use hyperlinks for citations. Submissions with footnotes will not be accepted.   How to Submit? To submit the pieces, please fill out the form given at the end of this post.   Awards All attendees will be given a certificate of merit. Authors will be considered for awards in two separate categories ‘Internal’ (JGLS students) and ‘External’. The five best-ranked submissions in each category shall be rewarded with a certificate of excellence and individual Gift Vouchers amounting to 5,000/- INR each.   Important Dates Deadline for Submission of Abstract and Paper: November 6, 2022 Notification of Acceptance: February 5, 2023 Paper Presentation: Late March to Early April 2023 (final dates to be announced)   Contact Information Write at [email protected]

Now personalization is not just limited to advertisements but has extended to the product, prices and contract terms also. This automation has created new degrees of opportunities, risks and liabilities for the consumers. Numerous legal firms are also employing AI for automated compliance monitoring and enforcement of consumer laws. This makes it imperative to examine the impact, positive or negative, of Artificial Intelligence on consumer protection and solve the tussle between AI and Consumer Protection Act and Motor Vehicle Act. AI and Forensics Forensics as a subject is a complex intersection of science and law. AI has entered multiple arenas of forensics like digital forensics, multimedia forensics, speaker identification, image processing etc. It plays a crucial role in deciding cases. It can enhance the likelihood of detecting fraud, cybercrime, and other illegal activities. However, there is no proper guideline or statute adhering to international standards regulating investigators and experts. Another major legal concern is its admissibility in the court. Therefore, we need to deliberate on the issues and challenges faced to chart a way. AI and Intellectual Property Laws AI in near future can disrupt the field of intellectual Property. It is at a complex juncture with copyright, patent and trademark. AI-enabled systems can create breakthrough inventions without any human intervention. Indian IPR laws are outdated and so it becomes crucial to ruminate on how to amend them on lines of changing technology, keeping in mind the international legal framework. AI and Human Rights  Artificial Intelligence systems can prove to be vital in upholding human rights. It can detect potential violations of human rights. However, there are chances that the real-life impact of AI can severely harm human interest if left unchecked. A plethora of issues like the use of deepfakes, job replacement, suppression of freedom of speech on social media, infringement of privacy, furthering gender and race bias over the internet etc have cropped up in the past few years. Hence, there is a need to decide on how to re-design our laws and regulatory framework to deal with these problems in an efficient manner. Health Care Laws and AI The past decade has seen many advances in the field of health care due to the use of AI. It has increased the efficiency of surgeons with the use of robots, reduced the cost, and provides better treatment and aftercare. But there are potential legal and policy issues like lack of transparency, unauthorized use of data, bias, medical malpractice, errors in diagnosis etc. which requires evaluation by lawmakers and scholars.  Artificial Intelligence and International Law AI tools are being extensively used by states in governance and enforcement of International Law. There is immense potential for AI to be used in the automation of legal services, legal personality, military and weapon systems, cyber defense, treaties, delegation, asylum etc. Therefore, the is an urgent need to explore the substantive areas of International law that will intersect with machine learning. AI and Criminal Justice System  AI has started metamorphosing the criminal justice system by reducing pendency in courts, increasing accessibility of justice, preventing crime, and modernizing the policing ecosystem. Nonetheless, there is a need to address specific points like the criminal liability of AI, predictive justice, unauthorized surveillance, bias and discrimination. Cyber security laws and AI The cyber security industry is progressing to keep up with the frequent and sophisticated threats from hackers and AI has an important role in maintaining its agility. Security professionals can now detect vulnerabilities, predict threats, and recognize the origin of the attack and malicious patterns in network traffic. However, the same AI has been used by hackers to steal proprietary data, and launch attacks. Hence, there is a need to analyze and evaluate the contemporary legal system and recommend measures for improvement.   Submission and Formatting Guidelines Long and short articles must be accompanied by an abstract of not more than 250 words. There can be a maximum of one co-author in one submission. All manuscripts must be submitted in English language only. The research paper must be the original and unpublished work of the author(s). Rule of Law has been the touchstone of human civilization over the centuries for social interactions and transactions between human beings through the prisms of equality and justice. Within the discourse of rule of law, States have sought to harmonize distinct interest groups to retain political continuum and relevance. However, with the last century bringing unprecedented and permanent changes in human society, the State has per se struggled to retain their authority on obsequent and hostile constituencies. The 21st century has continued these changes in an exponential manner and the concept of Rule of Law is placed in a gordian knot dilemma. Artificial intelligence, gender fluidity, climate change are terms unfamiliar with previous generations but have become part of the lingua franca in contemporary times. States which fail to engage in emergent glocal phenomena are bound to face challenges within their respective legal systems which threaten existing norms based on Rule of Law.   Sub Themes Scholarly submissions are solicited from scholars, academicians, and practitioners to contribute critical articles within the framework of these challenges to the Rule of Law on the following suggested sub-themes: Criminalization and Decriminalization of Social Media Content Artificial Intelligence as the Inventor/Creator of Intellectual Property Jurisprudence of Sentient Beings Rights Gender Fluidity and Human Rights Principles of Natural Justice and Flexibilities in Procedural Laws Labour Rights in the Gig Economy State Regulation of Neoliberal Tax and Investment Regimes Biodiversity Loss and Climate Change Denial Constitutionalism in Authoritarian and Totalitarian Regimes New Approaches to Theorization in International Law Use of Technology in International and Non-International Armed Conflicts Jurisdictional Issues in Personal Laws Data Protection and Privacy Concerns in Cyberspace Corporate Governance Issues in Multinational Companies Emerging Perspectives on Dissent and Legal Co-option Any other sub-theme related to the main theme.   Submission Details All submissions are to be made online to [email protected] The last date for receiving contributions is September 30, 2022. Note: Please follow the Editorial Policy of the Journal given at the end of this post for making any submission to the Journal.
