Workshop on Ethnographic Research Methods for Activists by Sambhaavnaa Institute
Workshop on Ethnographic Research Methods for Activists by Sambhaavnaa Institute

Sambhaavnaa Institute is organizing a workshop for activists called Perspectives: Ethnographic Research Methods for Activists from October 19 to 22.   About the Facilitator Atreyee Majumder is an anthropologist. She earned her doctoral degree from Yale University (2014). She has been an Andrew Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at the Jackman Humanities Institute, University of Toronto (2016-18). Her doctoral work culminated in her first book Time, Space, and Capital in India: Longing and Belonging in an Urban-Industrial Hinterland (Routledge, 2018). Drawing on her facility in Bengali and Hindi, her research examines questions related to urbanism, print cultures, and religion. This empirical canvas allows her to engage in historically grounded theoretical inquiries – a kind of ear-to-the-ground philosophical practice – into the relationship between time and space, and more recently, inquiries of self and personhood. Her current research agenda is located at the intersection of anthropology, theology, and the philosophy of religion, specifically concerned with the devotional practice of Bhakti. Ethnographic research for this project is being conducted in the sacred city of Vrindavan and its surround in northern India. She has published widely in academic and popular venues including the South Asian Multidisciplinary Academic Journal, Religions, Economic and Political Weekly, 3AM magazine, India Today, Article 14, and LSE Review of Books. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru. She is a published poet and an amateur violinist.   Who is it for? Are you a professional in an area that tries to make changes (for the better) in other people’s lives? Does your work get broadly described as a change agent or development practitioner or activist?  Your work of making change and having an improvement in the current state of someone else’s life may require understanding these people’s perspectives on who they are, what role you may play in their lives, and what they think is their own location in the community and the larger world. If these questions are relevant to the work you do, you would definitely benefit from a conversation with practitioners of sociocultural anthropology.   About Anthropology and its Peculiar Method Sociocultural Anthropology was a key form of knowledge through which colonial rulers came to know about their native subjects in the colonies – especially people who were different from people in European countries. Anthropology, thus, has struggled through the twentieth century, to come to terms with its methodology of ethnography. What does it mean for a bunch of researchers (usually trained in privileged parts of the world) to go and study in deep intimacy – the lives of Others – the lives of people who usually live in relative deprivation or disadvantage? The very practical choice of fieldsite and communities of ‘native’ subjects to be studied, was made possible by European imperial investment in societies of ‘difference’. Much of this travel into another’s life has changed in its pattern of execution and in its philosophy, across the twentieth century. Ethnography is the method of talking, seeing, and documenting to establish a sense of other people’s lives – used by anthropologists. The notion of ‘difference’ is fundamental to this technique one that simultaneously moves away from the Us/Them divide. Ethnography and anthropology go hand-in-hand, but there are possibilities for the usage of ethnographic methods outside of the disciplinary domain of anthropology. Who are we? Who are these people in whose lives we seek to intervene? These questions come to the forefront of many of our lives – as policymakers, journalists, activists, and many other professions that operate outside of academia. The ethnographic lens can help in some of these endeavors.   Objectives This workshop conducted over four days (see detailed plan on the website, link below) aims at: Day 1: Bring ethnographic research techniques to people outside the anthropological universe, especially those who work at the intersection of law, policy, and society. This requires engagement with some reading material on the first two days. Day 2: Constructing research questions and visiting one’s ongoing, or currently planned research through the ethnographic lens. Bringing to the forefront, the elements of mutual dialogue, ethics, situational sensitivity and understanding in furthering the work of activists and practitioners. Day 3: Bringing to the forefront, the elements of mutual dialogue, ethics, situational sensitivity and understanding in furthering the work of activists. Participants will write a short ethnography based on their future or ongoing research. Day 4: Writing workshop.   Structure The workshop explains what ethnographic research is and what kinds of things it can be useful for. The first two sessions will introduce ethnography as a research technique of anthropology. It will unpack ‘a point of view about points of view’. This discussion will depend on unpacking some previously distributed reading material, that participants will have to come having read beforehand. The final session focuses on a small writing assignment where each participant will share their work with the rest of the group.   Dates October 19 to 22, 2022   Venue Sambhaavnaa Institute, VPO – Kandbari, Tehsil – Palampur, District – Kangra, PIN 176061, Himachal Pradesh   Contribution towards Programs Costs  Participants would contribute a number of INR 5000/- towards workshop expenses, inclusive of all on-site workshop costs: boarding, lodging, and all the materials used in the workshop. Need-based partial waivers are available; we have a very limited number of partial waivers, so, please apply for a waiver only if you really need it. Please do remember that there may be others who need it more than you.   Language  English (with Hindi translation)   Contact Information For any other info WhatsApp or call: 889 422 7954 (between 10 am to 5 pm), or e-mail: [email protected]   To apply click here

Workshop: Understanding Deregulation, Privatization, and Economic Reforms by Sambhaavnaa Institute, HP
Workshop: Understanding Deregulation, Privatization, and Economic Reforms by Sambhaavnaa Institute, HP

Sambhaavnaa Institute, HP is organizing a Workshop on Understanding Deregulation, Privatization, and Economic Reforms and is making a call for registrations for the same.   Background The country is witnessing an outburst of youth anger manifested through their protests against hiring policies in the armed forces, railways, and other recruitments which guarantee secured government jobs. Political observers have noted that the protests are a manifestation of massive unemployment in the country and a breakdown in the economic structures. The slowdown in the economy had started much before the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country with high unemployment and low labor participation rate leading to weak demand and further slowing down of aggregate demand, production, investment, and job creation. The pandemic, which has come after disastrous policies such as demonetization, and GST, along with the brutal lockdown decisions, resulted in a situation where the economy was contracted by 7.3% in 2021.   According to a new RBI report, the Indian economy will take more than a decade to overcome the losses caused by the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.  The trend however is not to adopt a different development path to build back but to intensify the process of neoliberal reforms furthering a push towards the greater opening of the economy through various policies offering ‘ease of doing business including tax cuts to corporates, write-offs, privatization of airports, public sector units like Air India, attempts for bank privatization, divestment of shares from LIC, etc. Divestments, privatization, etc. are supposed to fund massive infrastructure development projects in the country. The government expects the post-covid growth story to be finance-led growth. The outburst of youth and other people is thus a result of all that is happening on the economic front. It is, therefore, necessary to understand the policies, trajectories, and movers of this new growth framework and how it impacts the life and livelihood of the people.   About the Workshop This workshop will help the participants to understand the reasons for the derailment of the economy and the processes of policies that are being followed, their impact and implications, and the reforms which are in pipeline – to understand the trajectory of change. The workshop will help participants understand: The state of reforms in the country and their impacts Analysis of finance mobilizations through asset monetization and disinvestments The rising role of private finance and how to track private finance The trajectory of public sector banking and reforms Role of international finance in pushing post-covid reforms Rising wealth inequality based on the financialization Understanding current changes from a gender perspective Tracking development finances for a project The workshop will help participants to understand and analyze collaboratively the discussions around finance and its policies whether it is on GST, IBC, LIC, Public sector banks, International Finance Institutions like World Bank, etc. If future growth is linked with finance-led growth, it is important that activists and civil society organizations get accustomed to some of these debates and their implications. Further, the workshop will help participants understand the financial actors, sources, and finance and how to track finances.     Methodology The sessions will be non-technical; they’ll be taken by researchers, civil society leaders, and activists. No prior training in economics or any other discipline is needed.  Through lectures, case studies, and discussions, about the history, reforms, and impact, we will discuss the above-mentioned themes. Sessions will be followed by Q &A sessions. A set of readings will be sent in advance to help the participants engage better.  Program Schedule: Please click here to see the schedule for 4 days Language: The primary medium of instruction will be in English.  Dates and Venue: 8th September to  11th September 2022, Sambhaavnaa Institute, VPO – Kandbari, Tehsil – Palampur, District – Kangra, PIN 176061, Himachal Pradesh   Resource Persons V Sridhar – Sridhar specializes in economic journalism. He has been a journalist since 1987 and has worked with The Hindu Group since 1991. Currently, he is a commissioner in the Peoples Commission on Public sector and Public services.   Thomas Franco:  He is the former general secretary of the All India Bank Officers Confederation and currently coordinates the Peoples Commission on Public sector and public services  Researchers from CFA (Anuradha Munshi, Gaurav Dwivedi, Anirbhan Bhattacharya, Priyadharshini, Maju Varghese)   Who can Register? The workshop will be useful for activists, students, and groups to understand how deregulation is resulting in privatization and other business-friendly measures being taken by the government. It will look into banking reforms, specific case studies on privatization of LIC, wealth inequality, the role of private finance, and how people can monitor finance. It gives an understanding of financial activism by linking it with the social and economic movements of our times.    Participant Contribution They hope that participants would contribute a number of Rs. 5000/- towards workshop expenses, inclusive of all onsite workshop costs: boarding, lodging, and all the materials used in the workshop. Travel of participants will have to be borne by the participants/ respective organization.   For registration click here

The ultra-conservative society where we live in, has been the centre point of discrimination and delegitimization of the issues faced by the LGBTQIA+ community. Many from the community often come to the educational institutions hoping for them to be an inclusive, safe and accepting space. But the conservative mindsets, lack of inclusive policies and awareness further act as hindrances in their quest of seeking equality. In order to raise awareness regarding these issues and to facilitate a nuanced understanding of issues faced in legal spaces, we invite stakeholders from different parts of the country to join us in this panel discussion.  They hope that this panel discussion helps us navigate through the structural and policy reforms that would make educational institutions and legal spaces more inclusive.    About the Panellists Rohin Bhatt: He is a queer lawyer and a queer rights activist from India. He is graduated this year with a Master of Bioethics degree from Harvard Medical School and is the co-founder of the Indian Bioethics Project. He writes on a wide range of topics including queerness, reproductive rights, bioethics, constitutional law and the effects that fascism has on human rights on both academic and public platforms. Anish Gawande: He is a writer and translator. After graduating with a degree in comparative literature and society from Columbia University, he moved back to India to work within electoral politics and run the Dara Shikoh Fellowship, an interdisciplinary arts residency in Kashmir. Anish is the founder of Pink List India, the country’s first list of politicians supporting LGBTQ+ rights, and is passionate about the intersection of queerness and politics in the global South.
