Panel Discussion on Sex Work as Work by NLU Delhi
Panel Discussion on Sex Work as Work by NLU Delhi

About NLU Delhi National Law University, Delhi was established in 2008 by Act No. 1 of 2008 of NCT Delhi in the National Capital Territory of Delhi with the initiative of the High Court of Delhi.   About the Discussion Sexual labour has been a controversial subject of legal, social, and political discussion for a long time now. Per popular opinion, sex work has been recognised as a profession by the Supreme Court recently in a suo motto PIL on the rehabilitation of sex workers;1 though the actual legal position is not as clear. The Court carefully treads the moral, social, and legal tightrope by opining that “voluntary sex work is not illegal,” and that sex workers “should not be arrested or penalised or harassed or victimised”. Other organs of the State do not agree. What is the hidden message in this legal grey-zoning of sex work? How does it engage with the constructions of morality, sexuality, autonomy, violence, dignity under Article 21, and the understanding of work? Outside of the court, there are more complex debates revolving around the intersectional vulnerabilities of sex workers. Their positionality is a function of diverse socio-economic elements, including caste, class, gender (not limited to female), community practices, migration status, educational status, access to financial and material resources, social constructions of morality, control over sexuality, the State’s attitude towards them, and their own perception of selves. The complexity of debates can be gauged from the varied opinions on sex work – from it being a symbol of patriarchal domination, caste-based slavery, violence, and commodification of the body, to the idea that it is a form of labour, or business, throwing open the question of sexual agency. How do the ongoing legal proceedings and the idea of “rehabilitation” of sex workers engage with these social complexities? What does the evolving discourse on male sex workers tell us about sexual labour? What is the broader picture in the making?   Eminent Panelists Prof. (Dr.) Anuja Agrawal, Department of Sociology, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi. Dr Ashley Tellis, Independent Researcher & LGBH Activist. Adv. Tripti Tandon, Lawyers Collective. Ms. Lalita, Aakansha Samiti, Delhi. Moderator: Dr Sophy K.J., Associate Professor and Director, Centre for Labour Law Research and Advocacy (CLLRA), National Law University, Delhi.   Date & Time Thursday, 17th November 2022, 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.   Venue Room No. 506, Academic Block, National Law University, Delhi   Contact Information In case of any queries, please contact cllra[at]nludelhi.ac.in   For registration click here.

The newsletter seeks works that are dynamic and interdisciplinary in nature with a specific display of comprehensive knowledge on the subject matter. They have already released four issues of the Comparative Law e-Newsletter covering the areas of Public Health Framework: Law and Society, Gender Inclusive Framework, Environmental Development and Labour and Modern Slavery: Framework on Social Security Laws through a comparative perspective   Theme Metaverse is a virtual world which transcends reality and has a very egocentric perspective of operation. This is a decentralized platform which together with AI is used to create an extended reality through machine vision. AI in Metaverse can be used for networking and blockchain.  The role of Metaverse can be very extensive in nature where digital twins of natural persons can be used and smart cities can be formed as an interactive tool. These smart cities will be parallel to reality and can be used to socially interact with family and friends, from a manufacturing point of view it can be used as a digital interface between the manufacturer and consumers. But it is also very important to tread carefully into the world of Metaverse as it still poses questions regarding the privacy of individuals and the application of common law in this decentralized environment. Hence, we have brought forth the theme: “Responsible AI for the decentralized environment of Metaverse”.   Sub-themes Regulation in a decentralized environment Metaverse and Digital Privacy Crimes in Metaverse and Regulating user behaviour Applicability of Common Law in Metaverse Intellectual Property Rights and Metaverse Environmental Sustainability of metaverse development Enforceability of laws in the Metaverse These sub-themes are only indicative and any other topic related to the theme may also be submitted.    Submission Categories Long Article: Between 4000-5000 words (excluding footnotes) Short Articles: Between 1500-3000 words (excluding footnotes) Book Reviews: Between 1500-3000 words (excluding footnotes) Case Commentaries   Formatting and Submission Guidelines The e-Newsletter intends to include contributions from students, experts, scholars, academicians, and professionals from any field.
