Migration in Literature: Special Issue of Journal of Migration Affairs
Migration in Literature: Special Issue of Journal of Migration Affairs

About the Organization Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is a deemed university fully funded by the University Grants Commission, Government of India. TISS offers over 50 Master’s Degree programs from Mumbai, Tuljapur, Guwahati, and Hyderabad Campuses. Masters’ programs are offered in a range of socially relevant inter-disciplinary areas.   The 2020 Pandemic has foregrounded the otherwise neglected vulnerable lives of migrants, especially internal migrants, who live within the perimeters of the country but move from rural to urban areas not of choice but for very survival. Migration, for several decades now, has been a site of inquiry and interest in academia. Existing studies on migration and migrants’ experiences are largely shaped by social scientists, with sociologists, economists, anthropologists and political scientists debating the causes and effects of global migrations. However, migrant narratives in the form of conventional literary works as also the newly emerging genre of blogs/vlogs, films and documentaries have the capacity to empathetically and affectively relate to the complex, multi-layered lives of migrants. Literary narratives read the phenomenon of migration from different perspectives, be it as a result of wartime crisis, political repression, religious/ethnic persecution, lack of economic possibilities, the stigma associated with gender and/or sexual orientation etc. Such narratives help locate the migrant at the very complex interface of race, gender, sexuality, class, caste, religion, ethnicity, able-bodiedness, age, language, legal status, even climate politics. Literary narratives on the experiences of the Atlantic slave trade, for example, highlight the excruciating pain of forced migration that distorts a migrant’s sense of self, language and identity. The idea of the “slave migrant” that emerges in such narratives can definitely help the reader untangle the present-day intricate relationship between labour and migrant workforce that caters to the development of international economy and inevitably transforms the migrants’ living conditions and lifestyles. Certain literary narratives document stories of original inhabitants of countries, whose land, resources, cultures and economies stand ravaged by settler colonialism. The arrival of the colonizer/migrant and his subsequent settlement in the colony (both voluntary) inflicted immeasurable and often irrecoverable changes in the lives of the indigenous people of the colony/country. Migration, thus, is not unilateral but a phenomenon both multidirectional and inconsistent. However, migrant narratives can also be sites of resistance and resilience. Such narratives may highlight fusion cultures; interchange of languages and experiences may manifest in cultural artefacts like new forms of music, poetry, food, new political ideologies to name but a few.    Call For Papers Scholarly articles are invited for a special issue of the Journal of Migration Affairs (www.migrationaffairs.com) that might address, but are not limited to: Literary Representations of Internal Migrants Pandemic and the Migrant Experience in Literature Class, Caste, Ethnicity and the Migrant Experience in Literature Refugees, esp. Dislocated and Traumatised Women and Children in Literary Narratives Violence and Migration in Personal Archives Vlogs, Blogs, Photographs, Films and Documentaries of Everyday Life of Migrants Literary Narratives of Borders, Citizenship and Ethnic/Religious Minorities Gender, Sexuality and the Migrant Experience in Literature Intersectionality and Experiences of Migration in Literature Migrant Narratives of Resistance and Resilience Nation, Identities, Religion and the Migrant Experience in Literature Cli- fi, Climate Justice, and Climate Refugees in Literary Narratives   Submission Guidelines: The paper should be restricted to 6000-8000 words. Articles under Commentary Section may contain 2500-3000 words. The Journal of Migration Affairs is a double-blind peer-reviewed journal. This usual review process will apply. The papers may be sent to [email protected] with a copy marked to the Guest Editor, Dr Shreya Bhattacharji ([email protected]).   Submission Last Date: The last date for sending the paper for this issue is 30 June 2021.

DSNLU National Virtual Seminar on Sports Law Governance and Regulation
DSNLU National Virtual Seminar on Sports Law Governance and Regulation

About the Conference By its very nature, Sports Law, as a distinct field of law, spans across various different jurisprudence; for example, the law of contracts and negotiation, media law, public competition, the laws on drugs narcotics and artificial stimulants, etc. In India, there is no Central or State Legislation that regulates sports per see. The governance of sports in India is interspersed among many institutions at the international, national, regional, and local levels. Thus, there is an extreme dearth of clarity among law professionals, students, sportsmen and even sports regulators regarding the actual facets, scope, application, and interpretation of this law. Given India’s recent rise as a force to be reckoned with in the sphere of sports, it becomes even more imperative to overcome this shortcoming and remove the deficit in knowledge and comprehension of Sports Law. It is a practical law as opposed to theoretical law and is concerned with how law in general interacts with the activity known as sports, physical education etc. Sports law is growing to be an important aspect of the sports industry and knowledge of the legal aspects of the sports business is a tool which future lawyers must possess. The growing interaction between sports and law has created a new need in society for a greater understanding of how law relates to the sporting world. The Centre of Intellectual Property Rights and Technology Law of Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University is taking the initiative to organize a seminar to discuss, deliberate on the legal regulation of sports in modern times and as an amalgam of such diverse legal disciplines as sports law and policy, contract, tort, taxation, labor, competition, TV rights, match-fixing and related criminal laws, etc. and building a generation of the best sports lawyers from legal novices at the national and international stage. The Seminar focuses on the specific nature of sports and its pertinent jurisprudence. It extensively addresses and deals with a variety of facets ranging from criminal offenses like fraud and cheating to civil liability arising from contractual obligations which form an integral part of the subject matter of Sports Law. The topics and technical sessions are structured not only to illustrate the theoretical aspect of the subject but enable the participants to understand the practical application of the principles by analyzing the plethora of sports jurisprudence, explaining the interplay between the various laws related to it, identifying the distribution of powers among sports regulatory bodies both national and international and providing a comprehensive view of their dispute resolution mechanism   Target Audience of the Seminar This Seminar aims to bring together leading academicians, researchers, advocates, research scholars and students to exchange and share their experiences and research results on all aspects of Governance of Sports Law Seminar. It also provides a premier inter disciplinary platform for researchers, practitioners, and sports educators to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns as well as practical challenges encountered and solutions adopted in the fields of Governance of Sports Law Seminar.   Call for Contributions Prospective authors are requested to contribute their research in the form of abstracts, papers, and e-posters. Also, high-quality research contributions describing original and unpublished results of conceptual, constructive, empirical, experimental, or theoretical work in all areas of Governance of Sports Law are cordially invited for presentation at the seminar. Christ University Law Journal (CULJ) on Labor Law Reforms
Christ University Law Journal (CULJ) on Labor Law Reforms

About the Journal The CULJ (ISSN: 2278-4322; Indexed: Library of Congress Control Number 2013411703) is an open-access, double-blind peer-reviewed law journal. Christ University Law Journal seeks to facilitate greater interest and deeper insight in various fields of law among students, academicians, and legal scholars. It provides space for discussions, comments, and concerns in recent legal issues and developments. The Journal targets academic institutions, research centers, policymakers, and government organizations.   Theme Labour Law Reforms in India and its Implications (July – Dec 2021) About the Theme: It is estimated that our country has more than 44 central legislations under four heads (yet to be enforced) viz. Code on Wages, Code on Social Security and Occupational Safety, Code on Industrial Relations, and code on Health and Working Conditions, for regulating and protecting labor and we also have laws for ensuring the health, safety, and better working conditions of workers. However, Indian labor laws are often characterized as “inflexible.” Investors claim that majority of the firms hesitate from hiring new workers because of the stringent permission provisions existing in the present legal system, thus hindering the growth of Indian companies. Though the amalgamation of labor legislations can be considered as a major step towards reform, another concern will be regarding the dilution of the socialistic oriented labor perspective, which existed in Indian industrial jurisprudence. Liberalized policies will create more contractual freedom, but reduce a healthy environment for workers, specifically in terms of their rights. The daunting challenge before governments will be to balance the market, labor, and the employer. To examine these issues further, Christ University Law Journal invites research paper submissions on the following sub-themes: Labour Reforms in India: Issues & Challenges Economic Perspective on Labour Reforms in India The Code on Wages, 2019: A Critical Analysis The Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code – Issues and concerns The Code on Social Security and informal sector in India Industrial Relations: Challenges Collective bargaining and the role of trade unions at the outset of labour reforms in India The Code on Social Security: Issues & Challenges   Submission Guidelines Guidelines for Contributors: Christ University Law Journal (CULJ), ISSN 2278-4322, invites contributions in the form of articles, case comments, legislative notes and book reviews. All submissions are subject to peer review and modification as per the journal style sheet. International Conference on National Space Legislation Centre for Aviation and Space Laws, WBNUJS
International Conference on National Space Legislation Centre for Aviation and Space Laws, WBNUJS

The Centre for Aviation and Space Laws of the WB National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata is organizing an online International Conference on National Space Legislation on 27th February 2021. Background The space activities started predominantly as state-oriented activities in the twentieth century. With the proactive initiatives of the United Nations, the legal regime for regulating space activities developed strongly during the 1960s and 1970s. The period between 1967 and 1979 has been the golden era in terms of the development of space law as the five international treaties to govern and regulate space activities were adopted during this period. Unfortunately, the requisite consensus for developing further space treaties obliterated after the Moon Agreement 1979. Hence, international law-making in terms of binding norms stopped despite several efforts at the UNCOPUOS level. A cursory look at the existing five international space treaties reflect the sentiment of the common rights regime strongly worded in different provisions. This is due to the understanding that the outer space, celestial bodies and the resources therein are the bounties of nature, and therefore, everyone should have rights in them. This logic also extended to embrace the principle of benefit sharing in space law to respect the rights and interests of all. Twenty first century is evidencing dramatic changes in space activities with increased commercialization. Private players are taking lead in carrying on various commercial space activities. This shift from State-oriented scientific space activities to private sector-oriented commercial space activities has brought forward several issues, which require legal regulation. As the States incur responsibility and liability for both public and private space activities under the existing international space treaties, they cannot allow the private space activities to be unregulated. In the absence of international space law developments, States are left with the only option of enacting national space legislation. Consequently, since the beginning of this century, several States are making efforts to enact their national space laws. Even the International Law Association has prepared a Model Law on National Space Legislation to minimize divergence in approaches and to bring some harmony in enacting national space laws by the States. The development of the national space laws need to be in consonance with the commitments of the States under the international space treaties. However, the current developments in several States pose serious doubts about their adherence to international space treaties’ obligations. In their zeal to promote the commercialization of space activities, some States have developed their national laws in complete disregard to the international space law principles developed in the twentieth century. The United States of America, for example, has even gone to the extent of rejecting the global common’s status of outer space and celestial bodies. Various ideas are being floated for extracting the resources from celestial bodies and also for conferring private property rights over them; contrary to the principles set forth in the space treaties. Unfortunately, other States are not uniting together against such ideas, and some are even trying to adopt a unilateral approach towards intensive commercialization as reflected in the US approach. This is certainly a dangerous trend. In the wake of above concerns, the Centre for Aviation and Space Laws of the WB National University of Juridical Sciences finds it timely to organise an international conference to map the current developments in national space legislation. The focus of this conference is to find out how far the national space laws of different States deviate from their international treaty obligations and what corrective steps are required to ensure that international harmony is maintained in space exploration. This endeavour is expected to contribute positively in leading a way for developing balanced national space laws, especially in the States where the attempts are currently going on to enact national space legislation. Major Sub-Themes of the Conference Critical issues in licensing private space activities in different States Dealing with the aspects of responsibility and liability under the existing national space laws Property rights and national space laws Space demilitarization: National regulations National legal responses for protecting space environment Dealing with IPR issues under the national space laws Remote sensing policies and data protection National space legislation for India   Call for Papers Those who are interested in presenting a paper on any of the above themes must send an abstract of 400 words along with a brief biographical note (not more than 100 words) on or before 20 January 2021. The acceptance of the paper for presentation would be informed by 25 January 2021. A full-length paper of 5,000-6,000 words must be sent by 20 February 2021. If the full length paper is not submitted before the last date, authors will not be allowed to present the paper in the Conference. Submission of the full paper would be presumed as unconditional consent of the author/s for a possible publication by the organizers.   Important Dates Last date for submission of Abstract: 20 January 2021 Last date for submission of Full Paper: 20 February 2021 Conference Date: 27 February 2021   Submissions All submissions must be sent to [email protected]   Expected Participants As this academic exercise is on the current concern faced by the international community, participation from various segments of the society is expected. While academicians, students, and researchers would benefit immensely from the discussions, the legal practitioners would also be able to acquaint themselves with this emerging branch of law. With the participation of internationally renowned space law experts as resource persons, even the lawmakers and other government representatives would be benefited out of their participation in this international conference.   Awards Certificates would be issued to only those participants who attend all sessions.
