Nani Palkhivala Memorial Tax Moot Court Competition

Administration Nani A. Palkhivala Memorial National Tax Moot Court Competition is presented by the All India Federation of Tax Practitioners and Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai. The Competition is to be held from 26th November 2021 – 28th November 2021 on a virtual platform. The Organising Committee (O.C.) shall be responsible for all administrative matters concerning the competition and shall supply and distribute all necessary information to the participating teams. All determinations of eligibility are at the discretion of the Principal, BVDU NLC. A person may be a Team Member if he or she: is pursuing a law degree or an international law-related degree; is enrolled at an eligible institution as a full-time student during the relevant Competition Year and plans to participate in the Competition on behalf of that institution; has not engaged in the practice of law in any jurisdiction after graduating from any type of law degree program, and is not pursuing any post-graduate degree programme from any university or institution. The last date for registration will be 30th November 2019. The number of participant teams from India shall be limited to 20. The preference to teams shall be given in order of their registration. The organizing committee will have the sole and absolute discretion to shortlist the participants. The decision of the organizing committee will be final and binding on all concerned. The shortlisted teams will be required to reconfirm their participation and their acceptance of being bound by the rules of the competition within the time stipulated by the organizing committee. It shall be compulsory for all the participants to be present at the inaugural programme, final Round and valedictory function of the competition. The organizing committee will not be liable for providing the certificates if teams fail to attend the function.   Team Composition  Each team shall comprise two speakers and one researcher. The team shall send their particulars to the organizers by the dates to be decided by the administrators, on the college letterhead duly signed by the Principal/Directors/Dean as the case may be. Karnatak Law Society’s Raja Lakhamgouda Law College, Belagavi, Karnataka is pleased to announce the XI M. K. Nambyar Memorial National Level Moot Court Competition will be held in April And May 2021. The event will be divided into two phases, partly online and partly offline. The competition is patronised by Shri K. K. Venugopal, alumnus and the present Attorney General of India in the memory of his father and a great constitutional advocate, Shri M. K. Nambyar.   Langauge The language of the Competition shall be English.    Eligibility Law schools/Colleges/ Institutes/ Universities, recognized by the Bar Council of India, are eligible to participate in the competition. The participants should currently be pursuing their Bachelor’s Degree in Law i.e., Three-Year or Five-Year Law Courses and must have studied Constitutional Law subject in their course. Objective of the Competition The Seventh Prof. N. R. Madhava Menon Asian Mooting, Students' Conference and Judicial Colloquium - India Round aims at honing legal advocacy skills among law students of Asian countries. The Seventh Prof. N. R. Madhava Menon Asian Mooting, Students' Conference and Judicial Colloquium - India Round shall consist of two stages: - the India round and the Asian round; both to be held via Online video Conferencing medium, ZOOM cloud meetings. * The India round will be held from 26th November 2021 to 28th November 2021. Only seven teams from the India round shall qualify to represent India in the Asian round.   The India Round The India round will be held via Online video Conferencing medium, ZOOM cloud meetings* from 26th November 2021 to 28th November 2021 among student teams from the top law schools/colleges/universities imparting legal education in India. The India round will comprise of two stages, i.e., arguments from both sides (petitioner and respondent). The top seven scoring teams in the India round will qualify for the Asian round to represent India. Each participating team in the India round shall argue the case from both the petitioner and the respondent sides in two stages respectively and in one round only. No derogation from this rule is permissible. The top seven teams shall be awarded Rs. 15000 cash prize along with E- certificates of qualification to the Asian round. * There will be separate E-certificates for Best Memorial and a second-best Memorial. The two best law student awardees (one female and one male) will be chosen from the selected students in their final years who are participants in the India round of the Seventh Prof. N. R. Madhava Menon Asian Mooting, by the jury (constituted under an MOU between SILF-MILAT and Penn State University, USA). The law schools participating are to note that though they are free to choose their teams from any of the LL.B classes, only those who are completing Law degree in 2022 and finding a place in the top ten (10) teams in the India round of the Seventh Prof. N. R. Madhava Menon Asian Mooting, Students' Conference and Judicial Colloquium - India Round will be shortlisted for the consideration by the Jury to select the Best Law Student of the Year Awardee to receive a fellowship of $ 50000 USD from Penn State University, School of Law, USA to pursue LLM. (For the purpose of clarification, it is to be noted that both the oralists and the researcher will be considered for the selection of the Best Law students Award and Fellowship. However, the qualifying teams' oralists should remain as oralists; and the researcher should remain as participants in the Students Conference, 2022 to present papers in the Asian round. About NLUO IMAM The Moot Society is the official body of NLUO which oversees mooting activities in the university. The society’s flagship event – International Maritime Arbitration Moot is organised in the month of March annually. We, at NLUO, have chosen Maritime Law as the subject matter to complement the maritime operations in Odisha and consequently promote intellectual discourse in the field of Maritime Law. The NLUO-IMAM has created a niche for itself as it is the first moot competition in India and third moot competition in the world to have maritime law as its principal subject area. The participating teams will have an unmatched prospect to understand the intricacies of practical legal issues and pose constructive arguments which will augment their interest and understanding of international maritime arbitration.   Eligibility All students registered with law schools, faculties of law and other higher educational institutions offering a law degree program or offering law as a part of its program of study are eligible to participate in the Competition. All participants must be students pursuing either undergraduate or postgraduate law course (including LL.M. programs) or its equivalent conducted by any recognized institution. No student who has been licensed to practice law is eligible to participate in the Competition. Each participating institution is entitled to send only one team to the Competition, comprising of students from the Undergraduate or Post Graduate law course, or both. Team members must be bona fide students of the institution they are representing. The maximum number of teams allowed to compete in the oral rounds of the competition are twenty (20). The selection of the top twenty teams, out of all the registered teams will be based on the ‘Written Submissions’ submitted by the registered teams.   Team Composition A team shall consist of a minimum of two members and a maximum of three members. There can be more than two Speakers in a team. However, in each oral round, only two members of the team shall be allowed to present the arguments. Only those participants, duly registered as Speakers in the registration form, shall be allowed to present the oral arguments. Team may alter or vary the order in which the Speakers may present the oral arguments. Once registered, a team will not be permitted to vary the composition of the team in any manner. Changes, if any, may only be made with the prior approval of the TMS (at their discretion), if due reason is shown for the same.   Registration Each team shall register for the competition by duly filing the online registration form, available on the official website before 22nd January 2022 (11:59 P.M. IST). While filling the registration form, the teams have to select a team liaison. All communications concerning the competition shall be emailed to the team liaison. It is assumed that all the information communicated and materials distributed to the team liaison is communicated to the team. An initial ‘preliminary registration fee’ of INR 1500 or USD 50 shall be remitted by all the Indian teams and overseas teams participating in the competition respectively. For teams that qualify the oral rounds in accordance with Rule 10.3.9, an additional ‘final registration fee’ of INR 5500 will be charged for Indian Teams and USD 100 for the overseas teams. The Competition is organized by Jindal Global Law School, O.P. Jindal Global University and the British High Commission [“BHC”]. About the Moot The moot concerns legal issues on which the British High Commission works in its engagement with its British and Indian citizens, especially with criminal cases where British citizens are involved as perpetrators or victims of crimes, on Indian soil. The moot gives participants a novel opportunity to create a “Strategy Note” as their first submission in the preliminary round. In this innovative format that is a cross between client counselling and a moot court competition, the first round will be a hands-on experience where teams will put their thinking caps on and tackle legal and extra-legal strategies to work with a set of British clients. Based on the “Strategy Note,” 8 teams will make it through to the advanced rounds where the final problem will be tackled in a classic moot format. Students enrolled for research degrees are not eligible to participate. These requirements do not apply to coaches or advisors to the teams. Number of Team Members Teams shall comprise of three members, with two speakers and one researcher. No other individual may assist the team with researching, writing, editing or otherwise constructing its arguments. Failure to observe this rule may result in disqualification.   Team Coaches or Advisors and Observers Each team may register only one (1) coach/advisor in addition to the team members. The participation of observers affiliated with the team must be communicated to the OC before the last date for registration and must be approved by the OC. Observers are allowed to attend merely in an observational capacity and are not allowed to assist the team or communicate with them in any manner during the pendency of Oral Rounds.  The team coach/advisor shall not be allowed to contribute towards the preparation of the written submissions of the Team and shall not be allowed to function as a speaker or researcher during oral pleadings. A coach/advisor should limit their role to providing general guidance with respect to the subject matter of the Competition.   Registration To participate in the moot, teams will have to fill an application indicating their intention to be part of the moot. The OC shall have the discretion to select teams amongst those who apply, ensuring regional and gender parity as far as possible. At the time of registration, teams shall select an official point of contact from the participating team who will be responsible for all official correspondence between the team and the OC. Changes to the registered information will not normally be permitted. Exceptional circumstances may be brought to the attention of the OC, who may permit modifications on a discretionary basis. The decision of the OC shall be final in this regard. After registration, participating teams will be provided with a Team Code, which will serve as their unique identifier for submitting the Strategy Note and at the Oral Rounds. Teams shall strictly only use their Team Code and shall not disclose the names of their Universities or names of individual team members on their submitted Strategy Notes, or in the presence of judges, during the Competition.   Competition Scoring and Prizes  The following prizes will be awarded in two categories: ‘Winner’ and ‘Runner-up’, except for the Best Oralist – Finals. The average score will be calculated by dividing the total number of points of each speaker by the number of times the speaker has presented oral arguments, provided that the participant has presented an oral pleading at least two (2) times during the Preliminary Rounds.   Best Oralist – Finals There will be an award for the Best Oralist in the finals. This prize will be decided by comparing the individual scores of speakers only in the finals. In the event that the finals are determined by consultation/deliberation amongst judges, this award will also be determined by consultation/deliberation amongst the judges. There shall be no Runner up prize in this category.   Other Awards There will be awards for teams emerging as ‘Winners’ and ‘Runners Up’ for the Competition. Any change in the composition of a team is only permitted subject to approval by the Organizing Committee.   Language The official language throughout the Competition shall be English.   Structure The Competition shall consist of two phases – A written phase, in which all teams shall prepare written pleadings for both, the Petitioner and the Respondent; and An oral phase, in which the teams, shall defend their argumentation before the Court, pleading for both, the claimant and the defendant.   Mode of Registration Each team shall register for the Competition by filling the Online Registration form before March 20, 2021 (11:59 P.M.). About the Moot Competition law is a rapidly developing field of law although being relatively new in the Indian legal sphere. The applicability of Competition law is wide and is spread across various disciplines of commerce, consumer protection, and jurisprudence of free trade and is constantly evolving. In this connection, the TNNLU – CCI Moot aims to further the vision of the CCI by promoting, sustaining, and enabling young scholars and providing a platform for engagement and discourse. The MCC of TNNLU has been regularly conducting various inter and intra-moot court competitions since 2014. The first edition of the National Moot Court Competition was organized from 24th to 26th March 2017. In 2018, MCC collaborated with the Indian Fair-Trade Regulator, Competition Commission of India (CCI) for the first time to organize the 1st edition of the TNNLU – CCI National Moot Court Competition which saw large participation from law students all over India. The 2nd TNNLU – CCI National Moot Court Competition conducted in 2019, and the 3rd edition in 2020. This year we are happy to collaborate with CCI once again to organize the 4th edition from May 28th – 30th, 2021. Students enrolled in post-graduate or diploma courses are not eligible to participate.   Team Composition The team composition for the Competition shall be either two members (Both the members designated as Speakers) or three members (Two members designated as Speakers and one member designated as a Researcher).  Substitution of any team member or alteration of team composition is not allowed after the date of Final Registration except in extenuating circumstances and only with the permission of the Organizers. A Researcher, in extenuating circumstances, may be allowed to argue during the Oral Rounds with the permission of the judges.   Language The Competition shall be conducted in English language only. All oral submissions and written submissions (memorials and compendium) shall be in English.   Registration General Rules for Registration In this edition of the competition, the registration will be restricted to only 24 Teams of which 16 teams will qualify for the preliminary round through the memorial qualifier round. All the Teams desirous of participating in the Competition should provisionally register themselves by sending an email to [email protected] through the Moot Court Committee of their Institution/College/University or the Faculty Coordinator of the Moot Court Committee. Final registration formalities should be completed by the Team only after receiving an affirmative reply from the OC to the provisional registration email. Institutions may provisionally register and reserve a slot. However, the slot will be revoked if the team fails to complete the registration process.   Provisional Registration Provisional Registration for the Competition shall open on 16th March 2021. Institutions can temporarily block a slot by writing to the Organizers at [email protected]. Institutions will receive a response immediately regarding the availability of slots and reservation of the same. Institutions that have provisionally registered must complete the registration process by April 12, 2021.   Final Registration A slot can be secured only after teams complete the Final Registration process by 11:59 PM (IST), 12 April 2021. The XIV Edition  This year National Law School of India (NLSIU) in association with Trilegal, brings you the XIV Edition of the NLS-Trilegal International Arbitration Moot, set to take place from 20th to 23rd May 2021.  After successfully conducting the virtual rounds in 2020, with the knowledge and skills gained, the organizing team of NLSTIAM is glad to welcome universities from all over the world for its 14th edition. The four-day program will provide a platform for students from diverse backgrounds and cultures to interact and challenge their skills as future practitioners in the field of international arbitration.  Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsisting safety guidelines, we have decided to hold virtual rounds. The committee will be utilizing online communication platforms such as Zoom to provide the peerless virtual round experience as expected by the teams. A recognized institution shall be entitled to send only one team to the competition, whether from the Undergraduate or Post Graduate law course, or a mixed team. In a system where a university has constituent colleges, each college can register a team or the university as such can be represented by a team comprising students from different constituent colleges.   Team Composition  A team can have a minimum of two members and a maximum of four members. In each of the oral rounds, two members of the team will be speakers. Other members of the team shall not aid them during the presentation of arguments in any way whatsoever. Different members of the team can be speakers in different oral rounds. However, to be eligible for the award for Best Individual Speaker mentioned in Rule 15.3, a participant must have argued at least once for the Claimant and once for the Respondent during the preliminary rounds. The average score per argument will be calculated and the award will be determined on that basis. Once registered, a team will not be permitted to vary the composition of the team in any manner. Changes, if any, may only be made with the express permission of the administrators (at their discretion), if the due reason is shown for the same. Any changes with respect to the contact details shall be notified to the administrators with immediate effect. This obligation to inform shall continue throughout the course of the Competition Certificates for participating team members will be prepared from the team lists submitted. The certificates of participation will show the names of the team members exactly as they have been submitted. It is therefore incumbent on teams to ensure that names are spelt and presented correctly.   Registration Each team shall register for the moot by filling the online registration form before March 10, 2021, and March 20, 2021 (GMT) for Indian and International Teams respectively. The online registration form that needs to be filled is available here and on the official website of the Competition. The teams are strongly encouraged to complete the registration form at the earliest possible. While filling the registration form, the teams have to choose a primary contact person. All communications concerning the Moot will be sent by e-mail to the nominated contact person. It is that person’s responsibility to convey all relevant information and distribute all relevant material to the team.   Registration Fee  The registration fee for both Indian and overseas teams is INR 3,000. The registration fee is non-refundable and has to be paid by all teams, irrespective of whether they qualify for the oral rounds.   Payment of Registration Fee  The registration fee for the Moot is to be paid online, the details of which shall be notified by the organizers in due course of time. Any transfer fees or any other incidental charges must be paid by the transferor. The wire transfer must also indicate the name of the institution for which the transfer has been made. All teams must email a scanned copy of the payment receipt to [email protected]. The payment receipt must be emailed to the organisers within 3 days of the expiry of the deadline of payment. After the payment of the registration fees (initial or final), an email must be sent to [email protected], with the details of the transaction. This is mandatorily required. Once a team is registered after filling in the registration form, a team code shall be assigned to it by the administrators. This team code will serve as their unique identifier both for Memorials and at the oral rounds. Any team that fails to send the details of the payment of fees shall not be allocated a team code. The administrators reserve the absolute discretion to refuse or cancel the registration of any team.   Competition Format The Competition shall consist of preliminary rounds and advanced rounds. Each team shall argue in four (4) Preliminary Rounds: twice as Claimant and twice as Respondent. The Advanced Rounds shall, unless otherwise specified, consist of three knock-out rounds – the Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and the Final. The scoring and tabulation for the competition shall be based on a Round Points (“RP”) system. Each preliminary round will be decided on a scale of 9 round points, with 6 round points allocated to the oral round scores, and 3 round points allocated to the memorandum scores.   Prizes and Awards The winner of the Final Round will be declared the “Winning Team”, while the losing finalists will be declared the “Runners-Up”. The Teams with the highest total memorandum score (out of 200) for each side will be awarded the “Best Memorandum – Claimant” and “Best Memorial- Respondent” awards respectively. The speaker with the highest average score at the conclusion of the preliminary rounds will be adjudged the “Best Speaker”. The average score will be calculated by dividing the total marks of each speaker by the number of times the speaker has presented oral arguments. About the Competition The “SJCL National Memorandum Drafting Competition” is designed to enhance drafting, research, and analytical skills among aspiring lawyers. Drafting, an indispensable skill, is the ‘opus’/’il faut’ for a law student. Couched in a legal scenario, participants are required to be prudent and employ their legal acumen. The Covid-19 pandemic has offset the balance in the economy. The proposition for the memorandum of the competition has been designed in the light of the same and it focuses on diverse areas of law such as constitution and taxation. Participants are expected to analyze the facts of the proposition, where key arguments must be rooted in the facts along with apposite legal sources. The Centre for Business and Commercial Laws of National Law Institute University, Bhopal (NLIU), in collaboration with Trilegal, is organizing the 6th NLIU- Trilegal Summit on Corporate and Commercial Laws on 2nd May, 2021.   Eligibility Authors must be pursuing their LL.B. (Hons.)/LL.B./LL.M. from any recognized university for the academic year of 2020-2021 to be eligible to participate in the Summit.   Structure The Summit shall witness fifteen paper presentations (including essays and articles), held virtually. These shall be selected after an intensive review procedure to be conducted jointly by CBCL and Trilegal. The participants may adopt any suitable means for presenting the papers including audio-visual aids, such as PowerPoint presentations, etc. The fifteen selected manuscripts shall be published in a commemorative book (with an ISBN number). The top three presentations will be conferred with rewards. Co-authorship of papers (maximum two) among individuals from the same or different institutions is allowed. Essays: Manuscripts under this category should be 2000-3000 words and either cover a recent development or be issue-specific. Co-authorship is not allowed. All submissions must contain an abstract of maximum 300 words. Kindly note that the word limit is exclusive of footnotes and the abstract. Citations must conform to the standards laid down in the Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (20th 2015). Submissions must use only footnotes as a form of citation. Substantive footnoting is permitted.
