Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court
Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court

The Indian Society of International Law (ISIL) was founded in 1959 and was inaugurated in the same year by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India. The principal objective of the ISIL is to “foster nationwide, the study and development of International Law and to encourage the comparative study of the application of International Law in other States”. The ISIL has been publishing since its inception, which has attained a high standard and is held in great esteem the world over. It also publishes the ISIL Yearbook on Humanitarian and Refugee Laws. The ISIL runs postgraduate diploma courses on International Law & Diplomacy; Human Rights, International Humanitarian & Refugee Laws and International Trade and Business Laws. It has been actively collaborating with the ICRC in organising the Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court since 2001. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a private, independent humanitarian organisation, based in Geneva, Switzerland. The ICRC has been conferred a mandate by the international community to protect and assist persons affected by armed conflict. This mandate includes the promotion and development of International Humanitarian Law (IHL), including in times of peace. In the fulfilment of this responsibility, the ICRC is active in disseminating and promoting IHL in academic circles. This includes developing IHL curricula for universities, conducting university teacher training programmes in IHL and organizing events such as the Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court Competition.    The Moot Court In 2001, ICRC Regional Delegation for South Asia initiated the Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court Competition, with the aim of promoting better awareness of IHL among law students at universities throughout India. This competition is named in memory of Mr Henry Dunant, the co-founder of the ICRC and the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in 1863. The reputation and status of the Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court Competition have grown steadily since its inception in 2001. The National Moot Court has grown to include more than 60 teams, representing universities from across India. The success of the competition prompted the ICRC, in collaboration with its partner organisation for this activity, the ISIL, to expand the Moot Court beyond India in 2005. As a result, in 2005 the Henry Dunant Moot Court Competition was expanded to include a regional competition, drawing teams from countries across South Asia. The regional Moot Court competition will follow national and regional competitions (as applicable) that will take place in each participating country. Winning teams from each of the respective countries will participate in the regional competition, which will be held in one of the participating countries approximately one month after the completion of national-level competitions. Winners of the regional moot court competition will represent South Asia in the Asia Pacific Moot Court competition in Hong Kong.    Objectives The principal objective of the Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court Competition is to develop an increased awareness and interest in IHL in academic institutions throughout South Asia. A further objective is to use IHL to further academic excellence in the student community, and to develop their advocacy skills in an environment of friendly competition.    Administration and General Rules The official name of the competition is The Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court Competition (the "Moot Court"). The Runners up team will be awarded individual medals and certificates. There will be a Best Advocate prize. This prize will be awarded to the participant who is judged by the organising committee to have performed best during her/his oral presentations. There will be a Best Memorial prize. All the memorials, which are submitted to the organising committee of the competition, will be evaluated and the best memorial will be chosen among them to award this prize. There will be a Best Researcher prize. Each participant in the Henry Dunant Memorial Moot Court Competition will be given a general certificate of participation. The coaches and advisers of the participating teams will not be entitled to receive any kind of certificate or award. Since the trophy of the Henry Dunant Moot Court Competition is a "Running Trophy", it is the responsibility of the head of the institution/college/university of the winning team to ensure that the trophy is returned to the organising committee, in New Delhi, within eight months of the date of award, at the expense of the winning team's institution/college/ university.    Anonymity To ensure the smooth functioning of the Moot Court and avoid any perception of bias during the competition, the organising committee maintains the anonymity of the college/university/institute names throughout the competition. To ensure this the organising committee will allocate a code number to each participating team in the competition. This code is to be applied by the organising committee to the participating teams during the competition, including their written memorials.    Accommodation and Travel The organising committee will provide accommodation and meals to members of the participating teams for the duration of the competition, where it is required.  For the Indian National Moot Court competition and the Regional Moot Court competition, ISIL will be responsible to coordinate travel, accommodation and meals for all participating teams. Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition
Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition

13th Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition adopts a hybrid format with final rounds scheduled to take place at the palais des nations in Geneva, Switzerland from 14 to 16 July 2021 The 2021 Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition is going ahead but in an adjusted hybrid format. Due to the continued impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the preliminary rounds of the Nelson Mandela World Human Rights Moot Court Competition will be held online from 7 to 16 May 2021.  The eight-team qualifying for the quarterfinal rounds in Geneva will be announced on 17 May 2021. The Quarter, Semi and Final rounds of the Competition will take place in person and in Geneva from 14 to 16 July, with the eight participating teams and judges travelling to Geneva, Switzerland, for the final rounds. The Competition is presented by the Centre for Human Rights based at the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, in partnership with the Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Washington College of Law, American University and the United Nations Human Rights Council Branch (HRCB) at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The Competition will be held in English, French and Spanish.   About the Competition The World Moot is open to undergraduate and masters students from all universities in the world. Teams of two students (gender diversity is encouraged) from every university in the world are invited to submit heads of argument for a hypothetical human rights case. The 50 teams with the highest memorial grades are invited to participate in the preliminary oral rounds and present their arguments to human rights experts and judges of international tribunals at the UN headquarters in Geneva. The Moot Court Competition is the largest gathering of students, academics and judges around the theme of human rights in Africa. The Competition is open to students around the world. A team of two students from each university – preferably one woman and one man (gender diversity is encouraged) – is invited to participate in the competition. The best 10 teams from each UN region are then invited to participate in the pre-final, quarter-final, semi-final and final rounds of the Competition in Geneva. Teams then have to argue the two sides of the hypothetical case, representing, alternatively, both the Applicant and the Respondent before a ‘bench’ of human rights experts. The eight best teams proceed to the quarterfinal rounds, which is presided over by judges from international courts and tribunals. The Competition is presented in English, French and in Spanish. As part of the week-long Moot Competition, an Annual Nelson Mandela Human Rights Lecture is held. In 2019 the inaugural Annual Nelson Mandela Human Rights Lecture was held on 18 July. Retired Justice Albie Sachs – an apartheid struggle icon and former judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa - delivered the lecture, along with H.E. Michelle Bachelet, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. In 2021 the second Annual Nelson Mandela Lecture will be presented on 15 July 2021   Organised by Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria. International Migration and Refugee Law Moot Court Competition
International Migration and Refugee Law Moot Court Competition

General Information It is with great pleasure that the Migration Law Research Group from Ghent University is inviting you to the 2022 International Migration and Refugee Law Moot Court Competition. After winning its first edition, organised by the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 2019, we are looking forward to organizing the next edition of the moot court competition in Ghent, one of Belgium’s most picturesque cities. Please be informed that this moot court was first scheduled to take place in March 2021, but that, following the COVID-19 pandemic, we decided to postpone the competition for one year. The decision was made aiming to ensure that participation in person is more likely, in particular for students from outside the EU. This international competition aims to bring together students interested in international migration and asylum law from around the globe. It provides them with an ideal opportunity to sharpen their analytical, drafting and pleading skills, as well as to broaden their network with colleagues from other universities and judges who are experts in the field.   Moot Court Structure The moot court competition consists of a written round and a two-day oral round in Ghent (Belgium). Each team will plead a fictitious case between a State and a migrant before a judicial body. A particular and challenging characteristic of the International Migration and Refugee Law Moot Court Competition is that the case develops throughout the competition. Particular attention will also be paid to a debriefing of the case and feedback to the teams.   The Written Pleadings Each team should submit written pleadings on behalf of both the State and the migrant. The written pleadings should not exceed 6000 words for each party (excluding footnotes). An international evaluation panel will evaluate these memorials. A maximum of 12 teams will be invited for the oral hearing in Ghent on the basis of the quality of their written pleadings.   The Oral Pleadings During the oral hearing, each team will plead twice (once for the State and once for the migrant). The initial case – as submitted for the written pleadings – will be the basis for the first rounds of the oral hearing. The best teams will compete with each other in the (semi)final(s), in which respectively a new element and an entire new migration law topic will be prepared and pleaded. Each court session takes 60 minutes, including pleadings, rebuttals and questions of the judges. All judges will be experts in the field of asylum and migration law, thanks to a collaboration with the International Association of Refugee and Migration Judges.   Evaluating Committee Each team is required to nominate one qualified person, who consented to be a member of the evaluating panel. This member shall not be involved in (the preparation of) any of the participating teams. Each member of the evaluating committee evaluates two or three written pleadings.   Indicative Timeline Events Date Release Case and Case Material 01 October 2021 Deadline Registration 20 October 2021 Submission Written Memorials  15 December 2021 Announcement Teams Qualified Oral Rounds 15 January 2022 Oral Pleadings in Ghent 17 to 18 March 2022   Participation & Registration The International Migration and Refugee Law Moot Court Competition is open to all universities. Each university may participate with one team. Teams should consist of four students and a coach. Students should be actively enrolled in a Master programme of law (PhD students are not allowed to participate) or in an advanced stage of a Bachelor programme of law. Non-law students may participate if they have a sufficient level of knowledge of international migration and refugee law. Students may not have professional pleading experience. Student teams from the Global South are warmly encouraged to participate in the competition. Grants will be awarded to cover the travel costs to and from Ghent (Belgium) of certain teams who have qualified for the oral rounds, in order to give students from diverse countries the opportunity to participate. There is no registration fee. More information on registration will be shared via the website in the spring of 2021. Oxford Intellectual Property Law
Oxford Intellectual Property Law

The 2020 moot was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and the problem for that moot used for an online competition in March 2021. At the time of release of this problem, it is planned that the 2022 oral rounds will take place as a purely in-person event in Oxford in March 2022. The schedule will be finalised once we have a sense of team numbers, meaning that the following is subject to change: but we anticipate welcoming teams on the evening of Wednesday 16 March, and then mooting from Thursday 17 to Saturday 19 March 2022. We appreciate that circumstances can change, sometimes rapidly, and that teams will not know, for sure, whether they will be able to travel to Oxford in March. Interested teams are nevertheless encouraged to make written submissions, as making a submission does not require that teams pay any money or commit to their availability to travel. If a team wins a memorial prize but finds itself unable to come to Oxford, it will still receive its prize. We will also notify teams immediately if, due to changed regulations in the UK or worsening Covid conditions, we need to change plans for the oral rounds.   Registration and Eligibility Subject to §1A, the Moot is open to students who are enrolled on a full-time or part-time basis in a higher education degree, provided that: such course is not a research degree in law; they have not been admitted or licensed to practise law in any jurisdiction; and they are enrolled at their institution at the date of the Oral Proceedings, or at an earlier time as permitted at the discretion of the OC. Members of the OC are not eligible to participate as mooters, even if they otherwise meet the requirements of §1. Note to §1: prospective entrants who have any inquiries about eligibility are advised to contact the Moot Secretary at [[email protected]] at their earliest convenience. The OC has received inquiries in the past about the status of paralegals, law clerks, and patent/trade mark agents. Merely being employed as a paralegal or clerk will not usually fall within the exclusion in §1, as such positions are often held prior to (or without) being admitted to practice. The status of patent and trade mark agents will depend on the rules in the particular jurisdiction, and the OC will advise on a case-by-case basis. Any entrant into the Moot is required to declare, when registering for the Oral Rounds, that they are eligible to compete under §1. Anyone considered by the OC to have misrepresented their eligibility will be subject to an appropriate penalty determined by the OC, which penalty may include disqualification from the competition. It is strongly recommended that those wishing to apply for discretion under §1(c) should apply in writing for such a determination prior to entering their written submissions. Such applications should be addressed to the Moot Secretary at [[email protected]]. A university or other higher education institution may only enter one team for the Moot. A team comprises two or three team members, each eligible under §1. The same team must prepare the written submissions and appear in the Oral Proceedings. It is a matter for teams to decide which members speak (if at all) and in what order. A team may be supported by a third party or parties who fulfill a mentoring or coaching role. Any such individual must not make any substantive contribution to the preparation of written submissions nor contribute during Oral Proceedings. For the avoidance of doubt, observers are not required to meet the conditions of §1. On registration, each team undertakes to submit all documentation in good time to meet the deadlines set out in these rules. Additionally, each team undertakes to arrange timely payment of any fees. Late submission of any documentation or payment may lead to sanctions determined by the OC to be appropriate, including disqualification from all or part of the competition. Entry to the Written Phase is free of charge. Each team that accepts an invitation to take part in the Oral Proceedings is required to pay a moot registration fee of £450. This subsidized fee covers, amongst other things, registration of the team in the competition, drinks at the Official Welcome on Thursday night, attendance (including food and drinks) at the ‘Show and Taste’ lecture and dinner on Friday night, and attendance (including food and drinks) at the Saturday night Grand Final Dinner. If a team does not pay the registration fee by the date indicated in the invitation letter, it risks forfeiting its place in the competition. Teams are therefore advised to have their finances in place prior to the sending of invitation letters by the OC. Any observers travelling with the team will be required to pay a separate registration fee, calculated on a cost-recovery basis. Details about the fee and arrangements for observers will be released separately on the moot website. Each team will be responsible for paying its own accommodation costs. The OC will make arrangements for bed and breakfast accommodation to be available at the host college (Pembroke College) at a discounted rate. Specific details regarding accommodation options will be released separately on the moot website. Teams will be able to book accommodation at the host college when registering for the Moot. A team is deemed to have applied to enter the Oral Proceedings when a completed team registration form has been received by the Moot Secretary. A team is deemed to have registered for the Oral Proceedings when all of the team registration form, a mooter registration form for each team member, and all the requisite fees as laid out in these rules, have been received Teams are entirely responsible for their own immigration arrangements. The OC can provide letters of invitation to help with visa applications, but teams are fully responsible for requesting these in good time to meet the appropriate deadlines. It is strongly recommended that such arrangements be commenced immediately after invitation to the Oral Proceedings. Teams unable to attend the Oral Proceedings because immigration arrangements were not made in good time will not be eligible for a refund of any fees for the Moot. If a team finds itself unable to participate in the Oral Proceedings (for instance, because of Covid-related restrictions on travel), it should inform the Moot Secretary immediately. If that team has already paid registration fees, the OC may, at its discretion, refund those fees in whole or in part. The OC may also, at its discretion, allow that team to remain eligible for an award relating to written submissions. If a team that has registered for the Oral Proceedings fails to attend the Oral Proceedings without providing any notification or explanation to the OC, it will be deemed to have withdrawn from the Moot. That team will no longer be considered for any awards, including those relating to written submissions. Participation in the Oral Proceedings is by invitation only. Except as set out in this provision, invitations will be issued on the basis of the results of the Written Phase (below, §14- §19). The total number of teams invited will be at the discretion of the OC. As an indication, the OC invited twenty-four teams in 2017 and twenty-eight teams in each of 2018 and 2019, including the winner of the Canadian Fox Moot. The OC will also contact potential reservists, being the teams that finished next highest in the Written Phase. Those teams will each be asked whether they wish to be considered for an invitation to the Oral Proceedings if a place becomes available under §11. The winner of the previous year’s Canadian Fox Moot will be granted entry into the Moot, provided they meet the eligibility requirements of §1. They will tender written submissions, and will accordingly be considered for awards for such submissions alongside other entrants. They will automatically gain an invitation to the Oral Proceedings. If a team invited under §10 has to withdraw from the Moot or is otherwise disqualified, one of the reserve teams under §10 may, at the discretion of the OC, be invited to the Oral Proceedings. Should a member of a team have individually to withdraw from the Moot, the remaining team members may continue in the Moot (if the team originally comprised three mooters) or withdraw from the Moot (if the team originally comprised two mooters). The team may apply in writing to the OC for permission to substitute a new team member. The OC will have complete discretion in deciding whether to accept this request   Awards The following prizes will be awarded: The Allen & Overy Winner, Oral Proceedings Runner Up, Oral Proceedings 8 New Square Winner, Best Written Submissions The 2nd and 3rd place Powell Gilbert runners-up will also be announced Best Individual Mooter in the Preliminary Rounds (the Sir Nicholas Pumfrey Award) To be eligible, a mooter must have spoken in at least three moots in the preliminary rounds Ranking will be undertaken by reference to the average score achieved by each eligible mooter in the preliminary rounds Where a mooter participated in three moots, the average score will be calculated using those three moots; where a mooter participated in four moots, the average score will be calculated using the best three moots The 2nd-5th place Herbert Smith Freehills runners-up will also be announced Highest Ranked Team After the Preliminary Rounds Best Newcomers Award This award will be given to the highest-ranked team after the preliminary rounds representing an institution that: (1) has never participated at the Oral Proceedings; or (2) last participated at the Oral Proceedings in March 2018 or earlier. If, under these rules, there are only three eligible teams or fewer, the OC may at its discretion expand the eligibility rules. Professor David Vaver Spirit of the Moot Award This award will be given to team that best embodies the spirit of mooting, having regard to such qualities as camaraderie, perseverance, respect of fellow competitors, passion, and academic excellence. The winner will be selected by reference to a vote of teams at the Oral Proceedings, along with feedback from judge

Frankfurt Investment Arbitration
Frankfurt Investment Arbitration

The Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court is the oldest and most prestigious student competition in the area of investment protection law. Its focus is on the oral presentation of legal arguments before an arbitral tribunal composed of specialists in the field during a one-week final event that takes place in early or mid-March of every year. The Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court is unique in that it combines the law of investment protection, one of the most modern and fastest developing areas of international law, with the history of international law and of international trade.  Each year, the case study provided to students is based on real-life, historic events, ranging from a banking case of the 4th century BC (Isokrates, Pasion) to medieval papers from the Geniza of the Ben Ezra Synagogue in Fustat (Old Cairo), a dispute between the Russian Empire and the USA in the 19th century (the Dahlberg case), and the British Banknotes Case of the 1920ies.  The students argue the cases under modern international law, but usually historical decrees (such as the so-called Cleopatra papyrus), contemporaneous national law and legal opinions (such as legal opinions found in the Geniza documents relating to the marital status of Ashu Berakha) or treaties (such as the 1832 Treaty between Russia and the USA) play an important role. We follow this approach (staying as true to historic facts as possible) because we want to do more than just help the participating students to acquire a solid knowledge of international law and improve their advocacy skills: We also want to “infect” students with a passion for legal history and an understanding of the sophistication of law and economy throughout history.   Support by the International Community Each year eminent practitioners of international law, including ICJ judges, preside over the final of the Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court. Moreover, renowned scholars and practitioners dedicate their own time and resources to come to Frankfurt and support the moot court by sitting as arbitrators. All arbitrators are volunteers who are true experts in the field and have proven their expertise in international law, and in particular investment law, in real life.  By applying this strict standard for arbitrators, we strive to ensure that the students are provided with as realistic an impression of investment protection law as possible.  Our high standards also help us ensure that the performance of the students is judged both fairly and professionally. We also receive invaluable support from law firms and institutions from the international arbitration community in the organisation of practice pre-moots and mandatory national rounds which are offered around the globe free of charge to the students. Participation in pre-moots is voluntary and provides students with a chance to test and improve their arguments and advocacy skills prior to the main event in Frankfurt. In addition, mandatory national rounds take place in countries where more than six teams have registered. The final event in Frankfurt is also surrounded by a number of conferences which are often organised in cooperation with arbitral institutions, such as the SCC.  Both the conferences and the moot itself regularly receive media attention. Altogether, the moot and the surrounding conferences (about three each year in Frankfurt), constitute one of the largest events in the field of international law in Germany and certainly the largest event in the area of international arbitration in Germany.   Venue The general rounds will take place at the premises of the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The final is hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry.  The Frankfurt am Main Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the DIS are joint venture partners of the Frankfurt International Arbitration Center (FIAC). The FIAC makes available hearing rooms and other services for arbitration and mediation (ad hoc and institutional). Under a cooperation agreement between ICSID and DIS under Article 63 lit. a) of the Washington Convention, ICSID conciliation and arbitration proceedings may be held at the FIAC if the parties so agree.   Eligibility Team Eligibility All law schools are eligible to participate in the competition. Students must be enrolled full-time or part-time in the same program of study leading to the equivalent of a State exam or an LL.B. Eligibility of LL.M. and PhD (D.Phil.) students and students who are registered in a bar association Students who are enrolled in a program of study leading to a Master of Law degree are eligible to compete in the Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court only with the permission of the organisers. To receive a permit, please send a full CV of the respective LL.M. Student to [email protected]. Students enrolled in a PhD program are not eligible. Students who are or were ever registered in a bar association are not eligible. Number of team members A team may consist of two, three, or a maximum of four student team members, plus up to two additional Team Coaches. If a team wishes to participate without a Team Coach, it has to designate one of the students as the contact person that will be responsible for all communication between the Team and the Organization Committee of the Moot. At least two of the team members have to plead in each pleading. The Team Coaches are not allowed to intervene in the pleadings. Registration Each team must complete a registration form and submit the form by the deadline determined below. Each University may register only one team. The overall number of participating teams/universities is limited to 60 teams.  Due to an adequate geographical representation, the number of participating teams from each geographical area is limited to 6 teams. The teams to proceed into the Round of Sixteen are the best 16 teams according to their points received in the pleadings in the General Rounds. Scoring is on the basis of the oral hearings. The arbitrators will grade the teams on the basis of the advocates’ knowledge of the law, their command of the facts as well as their advocacy skills. In the Round of Sixteen, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and in the Final, the decision which team has won shall be made by a majority of the arbitrators.  Winning Team The Winning Team is the team that wins in the Final.  Best Team from a Non-OECD-Member Country The Best Team from a Non-OECD-Member Country is selected on the basis of points accumulated during the competition. 300 points for each victory in a Semi-Final or Final are added to the accumulated scoring. For this purpose, the IISL Board of Directors has constituted a Moot Court Committee. The Moot Court Committee may delegate the organization of Regional Rounds to other individuals, organizations or institutions (the “Regional Organizers”). Organization of and participation in the Regional Rounds must comply with these Official Rules unless decided otherwise by the Moot Court Committee. If necessary, the Regional Organizers may adopt their own specific rules applicable to their Regional Round, but these rules must meet with the prior approval of the Moot Court Committee. The appointment of a Regional Organizer by the Moot Court Committee is subject to the approval of the Board of Directors of the IISL. The Regional Organizers shall ensure the maintenance of a high academic level of judges for the oral arguments and memorials, and shall properly organize the logistics of the round, if necessary with the cooperation of the Moot Court Committee. Each Regional Round in each year shall have at least three (3) registered competitors from at least two (2) different countries within the region concerned, except for the North American Rounds, which shall have at least three registered competitors from at least two different states of the United States or two different countries. If the teams registered are not sufficient to meet the requirements of this Article 2(5), the Regional Rounds may still be held but the winner will not be eligible to proceed to the World Finals. Regional organizers may grant a special invitation to teams of other regions, which have no regional organization, to participate in a regional competition, with the approval of the Committee. The Regional Organizers shall endeavour to ensure that the winners of the Regional Competition obtain the necessary funds for travel and stay to participate in the World Finals, which are held at the location of the annual International Astronautical Congress (IAC). The Moot Court Committee will publish a timetable with all relevant deadlines and dates for the competition on the designated website of the Competition. Each Regional Rounds must be completed at the latest by the end of June, so as to be able to comply with the deadline for submission of memorials for the World Finals. Each participating team shall prepare memorials and argue the case for both the Applicant and the Respondent at least once each during its Regional Rounds. The language of the competition at all stages is English.   Participation  The Competition is open to teams composed of students enrolled in law schools, law faculties or law departments. In addition, the Competition is open to teams composed of students enrolled in schools other than law where it can be demonstrated in writing to the Regional Organizer concerned, if requested, that space law or public international law forms a part of the teaching program. The teams shall consist of no less than two (2) and no more than three (3) students who are registered students within six (6) months prior to the date of their relevant Regional Rounds. Students eligible to compete for include but are not limited to candidates for an LL.B, LL.M, J.D. or equivalent degree, but shall exclude PhD students and students who received their first law degree, whether an LL.B, LL.M, J.D. or equivalent degree, five or more years prior to January 1 of the competition year. Only two (2) students will argue in any one particular match of the Competition and are allowed to sit at the agent’s table of that relevant match. All three (3) members of the team are allowed to work on and contribute to the preparation of the memorials. Permission in writing from the applicable Regional Organizer is required if any student wishes to participate for a second or more times in the competition. No student may participate for a second time if such student was a member of a team that previously won a Regional competition or the student or the team was disqualified in a previous competition. No school, faculty, department or institution shall enter the Competition with more than one team in any year. A team may be composed of students from different universities within the region, as long as it formally represents only one university that is not already separately represented and that the prior written approval of the Regional Organizer has been obtained. Each team shall have a Faculty Advisor who is a staff member of the participating institution. The Faculty Advisor shall not be a student. A team may have one assistant to the Faculty Advisor (referred to herein as the “Assistant Faculty Advisor”). Faculty Advisors and Assistant Faculty Advisors supporting the team shall confine themselves to a supporting role, limited to a general discussion of issues and suggestions as to research sources, and shall guarantee that the memorials and oral pleadings in their final versions are solely the work of the students comprising the team. Faculty Advisors are encouraged to arrange for trial rounds and video training to prepare the teams for their oral arguments and to attend the Regional Rounds and/or World Finals in which their team participates. Faculty Advisors and Assistant Faculty Advisors shall comply with any Faculty Advisor Code of Conduct or Supplemental Rules adopted by the Organizing Committee or appropriate Regional Organizer. The role of the Faculty Advisor (and her/his assistant or coaches) must not extend past a supporting role, as Articles 3(9)(A) and 5(7) implicitly recognize. The Faculty Advisor may not conduct research but may generally guide research. The Faculty Advisor may not draft or edit the Memorials in either a draft or final format. The Faculty Advisor may read drafts of the Memorials and discuss them with the students in a general manner. The Faculty Advisor, however, should not provide specific written edits on the drafts. Otherwise, the drafting of the Memorials will not be “solely the work of the students.” This is a fine line. By way of example, a Faculty Advisor could read a Memorial and comment that a certain section could use some changes and additional support; the Faculty Advisor may generally discuss the issues that should be revised or expanded and may suggest cases that the students should review. The Advisor should not, however, make specific editing suggestions, or provide analysis of cases. When in doubt about the limits of their role, the Faculty Advisor should contact the Regional Organizer. Except in extraordinary circumstances and only with the prior written approval of the Regional Organizer, no team may have the involvement of more than three (3) students and their Faculty Advisor or Assistant Faculty Advisor. Without the prior approval of the Regional Organizer in extraordinary circumstances, no team may replace any one or more of its student members after the relevant deadline for registration of teams has passed. Each team member shall grant to the IISL a non-revocable, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, publish, or otherwise make available, in any and all media, the memorials were written for the Competition, and together with the Faculty Advisors, Designated Staff Members, and Assistant Faculty Members, shall grant the IISL permission to take, record and use photographs, audio and/or video of the Competition for any purpose whatsoever.   IISL Young Scholars Awards The IISL Young Scholars Fund was created in 2011 to support the achievements of students participating in each of the five Regional Rounds of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition. The Fund grants monetary awards in the following categories: Winning Team: 200 Euros Team with the Best Memorials: 125 Euros Best Oralist of the Regional Round: 100 Euros The Young Scholars Fund has been formed and is largely maintained by donations from IISL members, to honour the very significant achievement of these students.   For detailed information, click here

The International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition or ICCMCC is an annual international moot court competition on international criminal law that is held at The Hague and organised by the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies of Leiden University, The Hague Campus, with the institutional support of the International Criminal Court and International Bar Association. Pace Law School had conceived of the moot as an in-class exercise in 2004, and it was in 2005 that a domestic competition was started. The competition became international the following year, with the finals being held in 2007. With more than 100 teams from 50 countries taking part annually, the ICCMCC is the world's largest competition on international criminal law and is considered one of the grand slam or major moots.   Aim of the Competition The Competition aims to encourage university students to improve their knowledge of international criminal law in practice and in particular of the ICC, its mandate and its jurisprudence, by simulating ICC proceedings through arguing a hypothetical case. The Competition seeks to enhance knowledge about the Rome Statute, especially within countries that have yet to ratify it. In addition, the Competition provides participants with the opportunity to become familiar with The Hague based international institutions.   Participation All educational institutions offering a degree, or similar graduate or postgraduate qualification or training, in law or in a field related to international law, or in international relations, are eligible to participate in the Competition.
